Water wise: Big Spring stays below CRMWD’s allotment

Having struggled through last summer to meet water allotments set by the Colorado City Municipal Water District, made necessary by the ongoing drought, this season has served as a marked contrast for the city of Big Spring, as the municipality continues to stay well below the district's restrictions.

According to Assistant City Manager Todd Darden, the most water the city — including municipal raw water consumer Alon USA — has used this summer is 5.7 million gallons in a day, well below the 6.3 million gallons per day allocated by CRMWD.

Ribbon cuttings set for new schools

Big Spring Independent School District officials will show off their new elementary campuses Tuesday.

BSISD will conduct ribbon cutting ceremonies at the four new campuses, beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The ceremonies will begin at Moss Elementary, 3200 Fordham, and proceed in order to Washington Elementary, 1201 S. Birdwell, Goliad Elementary, 2000 S. Goliad, and Marcy Elementary, 2101 Wasson.

Following the ribbon cutting at Marcy, school officials will conduct public tours of the campus.

The Howard County Sheriff's Office reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. today (72 prisoners were reported in the county jail):
• CODY DEAN JAMES, 23, was jailed on charges of public intoxication and urinating in a public place.
• ROSALINDA SAENZ, 29, was jailed on a charge of contempt of court/disobedience of a court order.
• JOHN GERARD ESCOVEDO, 33, was jailed on a charge of contempt of court/disobedience of a court order.

City budget workshops begin Monday

City administration and members of the Big Spring City Council will roll up their sleeves and delve into fiscal planning for the coming year during a special work session Monday evening, as the municipality looks to begin the process of nailing down its 2012-2013 budget.
Preparing the budget will mean much more than just crunching numbers, however, as the city will be facing a number of serious challenges in the coming years, a fact City Manager Gary Fuqua pointed out May 29, when the council and administration met during a preliminary budget work session.

Despite a year of disruptions, distractions and noise, Big Spring High School officials are keeping their eyes on the finish line.
With construction wrapping up on four new elementary campuses, the last remaining part of Big Spring Independent School District’s $60 million bond project is renovation at the high school. As part of the bond package, the school will receive a new roof, updated science labs and a remodeled fine arts wing.

Facing road woes, county to tackle budget

Howard County commissioners are set to hold a special meeting Monday morning to discuss — and possibly take action on — the proposed 2012-2013 tax rate, the foundation for the court’s fiscal plan for the coming year.
According to County Auditor Jackie Olson, the effective tax rate — the rate which would bring in the same levy as last year — is 30.9221 cents per $100 valuation. The rollback rate, which is comprised of the effective rate plus an 8 percent increase in the levy, has been calculated at 33.1460 cents per $100 valuation.

• JOSE ANTONIO NIETO, 31, of 2403 S. Main St., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
• CODY DEAN JAMES, 23, of Lamesa, was arrested Friday on charges of public intoxication and urinating in a public place.
• MARGIE GREEN, 29, of 711 S. Johnson St., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ISRAEL MIRAMONTES, 28, of 411 N. Scurry St., was arrested Saturday, on a charge of evading arrest/detention previously convicted SJF.

FHS girl chosen as ‘face’ of AJRA

The American Junior Rodeo Association has a new face, a local face, at least for awhile that is.

Anne-Marie Lugo, a 14-year-old Forsan High School student, was recently chosen to be featured on the AJRA 60th anniversary Dodge truck given away for the year. Though rodeo is a a big part of her life and her resume is full of accomplishments to prove it, her talents don't stop there.

“Not only has she been a winner at every stage at this point, but she has also been a fantastic example for her peers and regularly mentors younger girls,” Cindy Lugo, Anne-Marie's mother, said.

Veteran Edwards honored for serving his country

Many years of service were recognized as Lacy Edwards was honored as the Hangar 25 Air Museum July Veteran of the Month on Thursday morning.

Edwards, a Navy and Air Force veteran, received the honor at his home, because of medical reasons. The eventful, emotion-filled ceremony held meaning to all those attending.

“We have been trying to honor him as veteran of the month for more than a year now,” Mike Tarpley, fellow veteran and member of the Veteran of the Month group, said. “Once he finally agreed to be veteran of the month, cancer hit him.

• AVEL ABREO RAMIREZ, 65, of 1512 Wood, was arrested Thursday on charges of evading arrest or detention, public intoxication and theft (shoplifting).
• JIMI LEE PAREDEZ, 25, of 105 W. Eighth St. Apt. C, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency and warrants for interfering with an emergency phone call and criminal trespass and a charge of disorderly conduct – language.
