Ector County kidnapping suspect arrested here

A suspect believed to be involved in the kidnapping of a 4-year-old child in Ector County was arrested early today in Howard County, according to local law enforcement officials.

Martin Silguero, 48, was arrested on charges of kidnapping and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle at the TA truck stop, located near the intersection of Interstate Highway 20 and N. Highway 87. Also taken into custody with Silguero was 30-year-old Veronica Rios, who was arrested on warrants unrelated to the kidnapping, according to Howard County Sheriff Stan Parker.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• CHRISTOVAL MORENO CORRALEZ, 52, of 1105 Nolan, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JACOB RAY ALBARADO, 19, of 300 Tulane Apt. 7, was arrested Monday on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest, search or transportation.
• ALYXANDRIA MARIE MUNOZ, 18, of 1216 Ridgeroad, was arrested Monday on a charge of consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Free depression screenings Thursday

Big Spring State Hospital and West Texas Centers will offer free and confidential depression screenings, Thursday, Oct. 11, on National Depression Screening Day.
Big Spring State Hospital and West Texas Centers began offering the screenings to the Howard County community in 2000. Scenic Mountain Medical Center began their partnership in 2007 with the two agencies to provide screenings at its facility.
The screenings will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the fourth floor at SMMC, 1601 W. 11th Place.

City Council to meet Tuesday

The Big Spring City Council will meet Tuesday evening to discuss a number of agenda items, including an update on a settlement agreement between Atmos Energy Corporation's West Texas Division and the steering committee the city is currently participating in.
The council approved final reading of a resolution denying a rate increase requested by Atmos Energy estimated at $11.6 million, a move City Finance Director Peggy Walker said would likely force the issue before the Texas Railroad Commission.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• JOSIE RODRIGUEZ, 28, of 5010 Wasson Rd., was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ROY GUERRERO CERVANTES JR., 33, of 1304 Nolan, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ANTONIO MARCOS, 27, of 800 W. Marcy, was arrested Sunday on a warrant from another agency.
• ADAM LEE GUZMAN, 19, of 700 Douglas, was arrested Sunday on a warrant for no driver's license – when unlicensed.
• CRIMINAL MISCHIEF was reported:
In the 1200 block of Harding.

Blessing of the Animals

Despite a little chilly morning weather Friday, the Rev. Barbara Kirk-Norris, rector of St. Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church, blesses a little black lab mix, one of the 155 dogs and 35 cats housed at the Howard County Humane Society. St. Mary’s Parish will hold a second community Blessing of the Animals service at 3 p.m. Sunday in the church’s Bennett Garden, 1001 S. Goliad.

Suicide attempt averted; Guthrie sentenced to six years

A former Big Spring radio personality who pleaded guilty to a single charge of online solicitation of a minor and was sentenced to six years in prison in 118th District Court Friday, was unsuccessful in an attempt to hang himself later in the day, officials said.
Kyle Wade Guthrie, 28, formerly of 408 Hillside Dr. who most recently had been residing in Wichita Falls, was rushed from the Howard County Detention Center by EMS to Scenic Mountain Medical Center. No details about the attempt were released, other than it occurred at 4:58 p.m.

Forsan ISD eyes possible bond election

FORSAN — School district trustees here are expected to take the next step toward a possible bond election when they hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the administration wing board room.
Forsan Independent School District trustees will consider hiring an architectural firm to help assess and address facility needs during the meeting.

Woman arrested for intoxication manslaughter

A local woman is free on bail after being arrested in connection with a 2009 traffic fatality that claimed the life of a former Big Spring resident.
Crystal Lee Calderon, 30, of Big Spring, was arrested on a charge of intoxication manslaughter, a charge that carries a potential sentence of between two and 10 years in state prison.
Calderon is alleged to have been intoxicated on July 12, 2009, when the vehicle she was driving was involved in an accident on Interstate 20 in Martin County.

Guthrie to stand trial Friday

A former Big Spring radio personality is expected to plead guilty to a charge of online solicitation of a minor in 118th District Court Friday morning, during a bench trial scheduled before District Judge Timothy Yeats.

Kyle Wade Guthrie, 27, formerly of 408 Hillside Dr., was indicted in early June on a charge of online solicitation of a minor, a third-degree felony.
