Sexual assault of child charged

A Big Spring man was arrested Wednesday on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child after law enforcement officials allege he assaulted a 2-year-old.

Larry Wayne Nicholson, 30, was booked into the Howard County Detention Center by the Big Spring Police Department at approximately 4:45 p.m. on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child, according to jail records.

Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer for the local police department, said Nicholson had been brought to the BSPD offices for questioning regarding the complaint.

Man pleads guilty in child porn case

A 36-year-old Coahoma man pleaded guilty to one count of transportation of child pornography in federal court in Abilene Tuesday, with sentencing to take place at a later date.

Kerry Wayne Feaster — who lived in the 400 block of College Street in Coahoma at the time of his arrest in September — faces a statutory sentence of between five and 20 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine and up to a lifetime of supervised release, said officials with the U.S. Attorney's Office Northern District of Texas.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• ROBERT E. HNULIK, 47, of Artesia, N.M., was arrested Wednesday on charges of possession of a controlled substance (two counts), possession of marijuana – two ounces or less, possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawfully carrying a weapon.
• DONTAE RENELL CARR, 30, of 2505 Chanute Dr., was arrested Wednesday on warrants for no driver's license – when unlicensed (three counts), failure to appear (three counts) and nuisance – animal repeatedly at large.

Yeats under scrutiny: Judge denies misusing funds

118th District Court Judge Tim Yeats said this morning there is no merit to allegations he misused campaign funds during his 2010 election run.

“A complaint has been filed against me with the Texas Ethics Commission by an individual from East Texas,” Yeats said in a press release this morning. “I deny the allegations made in that complaint. I am in the process of responding to the Ethics Commission concerning the matter. I am comfortable that I have done nothing wrong and the Ethics Commission will find no violations of campaign finance laws once this matter is fully reviewed.”

BSHS students listed among the nation’s best

Two elite seniors are gracing the halls of Big Spring High School.

Shermila Kher — who was named a National Merit Scholar finalist — and Lacy McMurtrey — National Merit Scholar commended performer — have been named among the top 50,000 students in the nation.

National Merit Scholars are determined by the scores of the PSATs taken during the junior year of high school.

• LARRY WILSON STEIGER JR., 28, of 100 E. Shangri-La Dr. in Azle, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
• DANIEL WAYNE PAYTON, 33, of Greenville, Ohio, was arrested Wednesday on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct – language.

EDC to help fund water project

The decision presented Monday night to Big Spring Economic Development Corporation board members was a hard one, according to Justin Myers, president of the BSEDC board, but it was one that had to be made.

“Hopefully this will be a one-time deal and our funding will be back up and we can continue to do economic development in 20 years after this agreement,” Myers said.

• JOE ANGEL MARTINEZ, 49, of Magnolia Ave., was arrested Monday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
• JONATHAN FAZ, 25, of 607 Jones Apt. 1 in Seguin, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ASHLEY LEE RAMOS, 27, of 1715 E. Highway 350, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
• ROXANA PAYAN, 22, of 8807 W. Cholla Circle in Odessa, was arrested Monday on a warrant for driving while intoxicated.
