Local kids invited to aviation class

Kids, get ready to take flight.
Kids Klub at Hangar 25 Air Museum — Flight School — will be July 16-20 for children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old.
“This is going to be a week-long journey of discovering the secrets of aviation, the life of a soldier and several other activities,” Museum Administrator Genevieve Stockburger said.
During the week, pilots will be coming in to speak to the participants about different types of airplanes and the life of a soldier. Each day will have a mission pertaining to the day's lesson and activities.

Vendor booth space available for Pops

Fireworks may be one of the main attractions, but vendors aren't far behind.
Spots are still available for those wanting to sign up as a vendor for the 2012 Pops in the Park celebration, set for July 3 at the Comanche Trail Park Amphitheater.
“Each year, we have those who come back from the previous year, but we also add a few new ones each year,” said Becky Crane, vendor director for Pops in the Park.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• JESUS ANTONIO PINA-TRUJILLO, 22, of 6000 N. Highway 87, was arrested Sunday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
• ANGELA ANN MCGEE, 29, of 902 E. 12th St., was arrested Sunday on charges of evading arrest or detention and possession of drug paraphernalia.
• NINA MARIE MARQUEZ, 29, of 1510 Sycamore Apt. B, was arrested Sunday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Breaking News: Early morning accident claims one life

June 16, 2012

An early morning accident Saturday near Coahoma claimed the life of one person and sent two others to the hospital.
According to Howard County Sheriff Department Deputy Jimmy Mayes, the accident call came in around 3:45 a.m. Saturday. Debris from the wreckage forced officials to shut down the portion of the interstate at about 4 a.m.
The accident occurred when a 1998 black mustang wrecked out near the Sand Springs exit. A tractor trailer traveling west hit the Mustang while it was disabled on the highway and shortly after, another semi came along and hit the first tractor trailer.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• CHARLIE JAKE TURNER JR., 32, of 900 S. Aylesford, was arrested Friday on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and public intoxication.
• FELICIA CANALES, 23, of 906 E. 12th St., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JANEY BELL MCCORMICK, 60, of 620 State St., was arrested Friday on a warrant from other agency.
• AMANDA KAY LONG, 25, of 2704 Larry Dr., was arrested Friday on a warrant from other agency.

Yeats: Don’t ignore jury call

A recent jury summons that drew less than 25 percent of the citizens summoned has officials with 118th District Court concerned, a concern that could eventually spell trouble for local residents who decide to ignore the call to serve.

According to 118th District Judge Timothy Yeats, approximately 200 summons for jury duty were recently sent out, but only 47 people showed up for at the courthouse ready to serve.

DPS honors fallen trooper Hogue

The Department of Public Safety has honored one of its fallen comrades by naming a new DPS patrol boat after him.

Former Big Spring resident Troy L. Hogue, a DPS trooper killed in the line of duty in Howard County 17 years ago, was honored during the naming ceremony at the DPS Training Academy in Austin Thursday.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• CURTIS THOMPSON, 52, of 500 S. Goliad St., was arrested Thursday on a charge of possession of marijuana less than or equal to two ouncesw.
• KACI MICHELLE CARSON, 25, of 405 Westover, was arrested Thursday on a warrant for disregard stop sign and expired motor vehicle inspection certificate.
• CHARLIE JAKE TURNER JR., 32, of 900 S. Aylesford St., was arrested Friday on a charge of possession drug paraphernalia.

Fire destroys bar, home; couple escapes safely

Local firefighters responded to a blaze early Wednesday morning that destroyed a Big Spring bar on the city's west side. No injuries were reported.

According to Big Spring Fire Marshal Carl Condray, emergency services received the call shortly before 1 a.m. with emergency personnel responding to the El San Luis Bar, located in the 3800 block of W. Highway 80.

United Way board adds members

And two more makes a full board.

During the most recent board meeting of United Way of Big Spring and Howard County, two new board members were sworn in for three-year terms. New members are Conoco Phillips employee Jason Brock and Sherry Hodnett of Home Hospice.

“We are very pleased to welcome Sherry and Jason to the board and are excited to see what new ideas they will be bringing,” said Sandy Stewart, United Way executive director.

The remainder of the meeting consisted of routine items, including acceptance of minutes and financials as well as other housekeeping items.
