Fire levels house trailer

November 28, 2011

A vacant house trailer was consumed in a Saturday afternoon blaze near the intersection of Highway 87 and FM 700.

No injuries were reported in the blaze, which was reported to the Howard County Volunteer Fire Department at about 4:45 p.m. Saturday.

“By the time the first unit arrived on scene, the trailer was fully engulfed (by the fire),” HCVFD Chief Tommy Sullivan.

VAMC tree lighting Saturday

Officials with the Big Spring VA Medical Center are inviting the community to help kick off the Christmas season Friday, Dec. 2, as the local healthcare provider will hold its annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony.

Daniel L. Marsh, medical center director for the West Texas VA Health Care System, assisted by area children, will throw the switch on the VA Medical Center's holiday lights, according to VA officials.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• ALEX FERRELL PAREDEZ, 20, of 903 E. 16th St., was arrested Friday on charges of public intoxication and consume alcoholic beverage/license for off premise consumption.
• YVETTE YVONNE SOLIZ, 26, of 1206 Johnson, was arrested Friday on warrants for safety seat system/child under the age of 8 or less than 4'9” tall, fail to display drivers license (two counts) and assault: by threat.

Law enforcment center on county agenda

Howard County commissioners will meet Monday morning to discuss a number of items, including possible approval of a contract with Dallas-based WBK Construction to manage the court's ongoing project to build a new joint law enforcement center.
The project — which would provide a new home for both the Howard County Sheriff's Office and Big Spring Police Department, located at the newly constructed County Detention Center — has been in the works for more than a year now, and according to County Judge Mark Barr, Monday's meeting could pave the way for construction to begin.

Man and Woman of the Year nominations acce3pted

Man and Woman of the Year will be announced at the annual Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce banquet set for Jan. 31. Of course, for those wanting to submit a nomination there are a few requirements to remember.
All nominations must be submitted in written form, provided and approved by the selection committee in order to ensure the relevant information is received about the nominee.

Chamber plans annual open house for Dec. 6

Sometimes a forgotten building, the Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce office building houses several entities which each serve a vital purpose in the community. December 8, area residents are invited to visit during an annual open house.
“We want the community to know our doors are always open,” ValVerde said. “We are here to help anyone and everyone in any way we can.”

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be stopping at the Heritage Museum Dec. 3.
This won’t just be a normal stop though, the Clauses will be having breakfast with the children of Big Spring, helping them decorate a gingerbread house and Christmas ornaments.
“This went over really well last year and we figured we would bring it back this year and give more kids the opportunity to have breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Claus,” said Nancy Raney, museum director.

• CHRISTOPHER CLINT ENRIQUEZ, 29, of 4914 Wasson Rd., was arrested Thursday on charges of evading arrest or detention and possession of a controlled substance.
• IAN DYLAN HEATH, 35, of Odessa, was arrested Thursday on warrants for driving without a safety belt and failure to appear.
• CATHRYN VIERA SALAZAR, 45, of 3304 W. Highway 80 Apt. 17, was arrested Thursday on warrants for failure to maintain financial responsibility and failure to appear.
