Time is running out for area residents looking to get rid of their mountain of Christmas trash — wrapping paper, boxes, bows — without a trip to the landfill.
Trash containers set up last week in the parking lots of Coronado Plaza, Big Spring Mall, College Park Shopping Center, Howard County Fair Barn and in the 700 block of N. Gregg Street are set to be removed Wednesday, according to officials with the city of Big Spring.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• GRACIELA LEAL, 39, of 505 S. Aylesford, was arrested Monday on a warrant for of failure to maintain financial responsibility.
• CODY NICOLAS SPOLLINO, 23, of 3910 Parkway, was arrested Monday on warrants for possession of marijuana – two ounces or less and delivery of marijuana – less than ¼ ounce.
• RODOLFO GONZALES JR., 49, of 1601 Johnson, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
• CRIMINAL MISCHIEF was reported:
In the 3200 block of Drexel.

Observers of the area agriculture scene agree: This year's cotton crop could have better, but it could have been worse, too.
A crop that's been called “better than average” and is bringing in record prices is winding its way through area cotton gins, meaning that area producers can soon put a bow on this year's efforts.
Smiles and warm feelings aren't the only things generated by the Christmas holiday, as officials with the city of Big Spring prepare for a major influx of something else this weekend: garbage.
Wrapping paper, bows, boxes and other holiday leftovers will likely fill city sanitation containers across the Crossroads area. However, the city will be placing additional trash containers in several locations in an effort to accommodate the holiday load, according to Assistant City Manager Todd Darden.
The patients at Big Spring State Hospital this month experienced many of the same traditions and activities that their friends and family shared this holiday season.
And in so doing, hopefully it will help them in their recovery as they work toward returning home.
Patients were treated to Christmas parties, treats of hot chocolate and other goodies, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, music, presents and a re-enactment of the nativity scene.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity Thursday and early Friday:
• JONATHON MICHAEL PAUL, 30, 605 Circle, was arrested on charges of driving while license invalid/previous conviction, criminal mischief over $500/under $1,500, failure to maintain financial responsibility and a warrant from another agency.
• ADRIAN PATRICK VALENCIA, 22, 908 S. Nolan, was arrested on a charge of driving while license suspended/previous conviction.
• LEONARD GUZMAN, 24, 1504 Vines, was arrested on a warrant from another agency.

Local shoppers aren't necessarily buying more this Christmas, but they appear to be shopping at home, which has Big Spring retailers happy.
An informal survey of several local businesses shows an increase in holiday sales over last year. While several businessmen declined comment, citing company policy, others said it appears that Howard County residents are shopping Big Spring first.
The world-famous Harlem Ambassadors basketball squad will be coming to the Crossroads area in February, part of a community project the Big Spring Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club is putting together for area children.
According to Sonnet Hildebrand, director of the local Boys and Girls Club, the Ambassadors are slated to perform Feb. 23, but before the first slam dunk can be driven home, her and her staff will have to raise funds for the project.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• HENRY JOHN RAYMOND, 37, of 1905 Wasson Rd., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• MARK TIMOTHY STANLEY, 49, of 1800 S. Lancaster, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of criminal trespass.
• RAYMOND JOSEPH BONNER, 29, of San Angelo, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of driving while license invalid – DWI related.
• LETISHA KAY MENDEZ, 29, of 1905 Wasson Rd. Apt. 25, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid – no insurance.

Law enforcement officials are remaining tight-lipped regarding an investigation into what may be a human skull discovered Monday morning at a location in northern Howard County.
A press release issued by the Howard County Sheriff's Office Monday morning advised law enforcement officials were called to the scene around 11 a.m. at an undisclosed location in northern Howard County after what appears to be a piece of a human skull was found.
