Air museum to honor vets, unveil new exhibit Friday

Hangar 25 Air Museum will remember and honor those who served their country at an ice cream social from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and revealing a new exhibit — Hangar History: A Flight Through Time.
“This is going to be an opportunity to do something fun and honor veterans at the same time,” Genevieve Stockburger, museum administrator, said.
The event is open to the entire community.
“Too often, Veterans Day is overlooked and this is a time to recognize the military history of the community,” Stockburger said.

As expected, voter turnout very poor

Less than 5 percent of Howard County registered voters turned out to cast their ballot in this year’s constitutional amendment election, with polls closing at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Howard County saw a total of 654 ballots cast — 272 during early voting, 28 mail-in ballots and 354 cast Tuesday — accounting for just 4 percent of the registered voters, according to official election reports.
Among the proposed amendments, Proposition 1 drew the most attention in the Crossroads area, which is heavily populated by military veterans.

• BOBBY LEE AGUERO JR., 29, of 1402 Mt. Vernon, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of hindering officers discharging official duties.
• JOE ERNEST VALENCIA SR., 48, of 202 N.E. Third St., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of hindering officers discharging official duties.
• JOE ERNEST VALENCIA JR., 28, 1615 Canary, was arrested Tuesday on charges of hindering officers discharging official duties and resisting arrest, search or transportation.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• AMADOR RIOS JR., 30, of 4215 Dixon, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• DANIEL LORENZO TORRES, 29, of 1408 Wood, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
• RONDEL WAYNE BROCK, 58, of 2800 Macauslan, was arrested Monday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance in a drug free zone.
• BOBBY LEE AGUERO JR., 29, of 1402 Mt. Vernon, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of hindering officers discharging official duties.

65 years of fiddlin' around

Dubbed one of the “flame keepers” working to keep traditional country and western music alive and well in and around the Lone Star State, Nix will mark 65 years of music for his family Saturday at the legendary Stampede with the group's annual commemorative dance.

Burglary suspect shot by victim

A Big Spring man was transported to a Lubbock hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest area early Monday morning after he was allegedly shot while burglarizing a vehicle in the 1300 block of Park, according to law enforcement officials.
Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the Big Spring Police Department, said officers went to a home in the 1300 block of Park Street at 5:23 a.m. Monday.

Council to focus on EDC, lawsuit Tuesday

Big Spring City Council will meet Tuesday to discuss a number of items, including first reading of a resolution involving the Big Spring Economic Development Corporation and first reading of a resolution to pay back wages and damages to current and former city employees, part of a lawsuit concerning errors in overtime calculations.
Among the items set for Tuesday's meeting is a resolution amending the way the city reviews and approves projects and fiscal expenditures from the Big Spring EDC.

Veterans home to honor residents

Veterans Day at the Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home will be a day of honor for all residents.
At 2 p.m., Friday, a special Veterans Day service will honor all veteran residents at the home with certificates honoring their service. Each certificate will bear the insignia of the branch of U.S. Armed Forces in which each veteran served.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• SAM STEVENSON WALKER, 52, of 1002 N. Main St. Apt. 65, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ASSAULT was reported in the 800 block of Scott Drive.

The Howard County Sheriff’s Office reported the following activity:
Note — Officials with the Howard County Jail reported having 67 inmates at the time of this report.
• ALFONSO BACA III, 29, was arrested Friday by the HCSO on a judgment/sentence for possession of marijuana – two ounces or less.

Props amendment election drawing little interest here

Early voting in this year’s constitutional amendment election wrapped up Friday with vote tallies falling just shy of results from the previous amendment contest two years ago, according to Howard County election officials.
Approximately 275 ballots were cast — including mail-in ballots — according to County Elections Administrator Saundra Bloom, putting the election on track to come close to the 600-plus ballots cast in the 2009 contest.
