Freedom Parade to honor veterans Saturday in Coahoma; you’re invited

COAHOMA — Those wishing to get a bit of a head start on the July 4 celebration don't have to go very far.
The community of Coahoma will provide the first word — or first celebration, to be exact — on what is traditionally a star spangled weekend in Howard County when it hosts the annual Freedom Parade and City Park Celebration July 2.
The event was first organized to recognize the community's veterans and this year's edition is no different, said Lori Martinez, one of the event's organizers.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• LEROY HILBERT ZUBIATE, 27, of 1207 Sycamore, was arrested Friday on warrants for speeding, no drivers license-when unlicensed, driving while license invalid (two counts), failed to maintain financial responsibility.
• ST. JOHN GARCIA, 17, of 2108 Johnson, was arrested Friday on charges of theft less than $50/shoplifting, possession of marijuana less than or equal to two ounces, possession of drug paraphernalia.

Deputy U.S. Marshals, assisted by local law enforcement officials, arrested an Indiana man charged with two counts of child molestation from Decatur County, Ind., Friday afternoon in the 300 block of Gregg Street.
Adam Carter Kelley, 32, was arrested by U.S. Marshals and deputies with the Howard County Sheriff's Office Friday afternoon near a car wash located in the 300 block of Gregg Street, adjacent to the Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce.
According to Sheriff Stan Parker, marshals notified his office they would be in Big Spring Friday in an attempt to arrest another wanted fugitive.

DAV holds fundraiser

Ed Meiser, Chapter 47 commander, places a donation in the jar at the Disabled American Veterans Fundraiser Friday evening, while Barbara Tarpley and Joyce Parker look on. The event, held to raise funds for local veterans — including the purchase of a van to transport veterans to the VA Medical Center — was held at the Hog Heaven Party Barn on W. Highway 80.

Drawing new district maps for a governmental entity is a concept that sounds fairly simple on the surface — take your total population, divide it by the number of representatives, then reshape the boundaries so that each district has roughly the same number of residents.

Annual stargazing party Saturday

Area stargazers will have plenty to look at Saturday when the Big Spring State Park holds its annual Stargazing Party atop the historic Scenic Mountain.

Park Manager Ron Alton said there will be several interesting heavenly bodies in view when he and members of the West Texas Amateur Astronomy Club turn their eyes — and telescopes — skyward.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• AMANDA CHRISTINE WINKLER, 50, of Moody, was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.
• MICHAEL E. BAKER, 44, of 502 Young, was arrested Thursday on charges of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction, dog or cat running at large and two warrants from another agency.
• DANELLE CHRISTINE OVERTON, 24, of 1746 Purdue, was arrested Thursday on a charge of no driver's license – when unlicensed.

Pops fireworks show will go on

Pops in the Park will go on with a bang.

There may not be fireworks for the Fourth of July in Howard County, but the Pops in the Park celebration will be able to take place as planned July 3, the Pops board has been assured.

“A professional show adheres to different laws than the private use of fireworks,” said Fire Marshal Carl Condray. “In the past, the city and county have worked together to provide the coverage in this event and this year it will be the same joint effort.”

Fundraiser to aid veterans

Crossroads area residents are invited to say thanks to area veterans and have some family fun in the process.

From 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 47 will be having a fundraiser at the Hog Heaven Party Barn.

According to Mike Tarpley, junior vice commander, the DAV Chapter 47 is always in need of funds.

All of the chapter’s funds go toward offering assistance to the disabled veterans of the Big Spring community, Tarpley said.

• PATRICK AARON RAMIREZ, 19, of 508 Abrams, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of burglary of habitation — assault.
• JACOB LEWIS JONES, 27, of 7011 Roberts Dr., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of theft more than $50, less than $500/shoplifting.
• GREGORY D. WILLMAN, 27, of 1315 E. 11th Place, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of theft more than $50, less than $500/shoplifting.
