Beat the heat

With temperatures having already eclipsed the 100-degree mark, officials with the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) are urging Texans to take precautions.

Emily Palmer, spokesperson for DSHS, said the elderly, the very young, people with chronic diseases and those without access to air conditioning are those most likely to suffer in extremely hot weather.

Relay For Life has new leaders for 2012

The Howard/Glasscock Relay For Life will have a new look in 2012, with Manny Negron assuming the role of chair of the Relay Committee. Negron, claims supervisor at the local Wal-Mart, has previously served as Team Recruitment co-chair.

Debbye ValVerde, executive director of Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce, who has co-chaired the Survivor Committee, has been named regional Hero of Hope and plans to assist Negron in that role. She has been active in the Salazar family’s sponsorship of the Candle of Hope for several relays.

Police Beat

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• FRANK FIERRO JR., 63, of 603 N.W. Fifth St., was arrested Saturday on a charge of public intoxication.
• MELISSA GUERRERO WILLIAMS, 32, of Lamesa, was arrested Saturday on a charge of disorderly conduct – language.
• RUBEN ROJAS JR., 36, of 800 S. Nolan, was arrested Saturday on charges of driving while intoxicated – second offense and driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.

Singers sought as Pops draws near

Are you feeling patriotic? Are you looking for something to fill a few evenings in June?

Go down to the First United Methodist Church where each Tuesday night for the next four weeks people in the Crossroads area will be gathering for choir practice. Specifically, they'll be preparing for the choral portion of Pops in the Park, Big Spring's annual fireworks and symphony extravaganza to be held July 3.

“We have another wonderful program planned this year,” said Dr. Keith Graumann, Big Spring Symphony director and conductor.

Cub Scout Justin Raymond takes part in the placing of the flags at Trinity Memorial Cemetery Saturday morning. Every year the scouts get together and recognize veterans who gave their lives by placing flags on their gravesite for Memorial Day. Two local ceremonies are planned for Monday to commemorate those who gave their lives in service to our country. At 11 a.m., the Big Spring Vietnam Memorial will mark its 20th anniversary with a program feturing guest speakers Sonny Choate and Tim McKinnon. Trinity Memorial Park’s annual Memorial Day observance is scheduled for 2 p.m.

A special surprise

A couple of Big Spring natives reunited in a special way recently, and — thanks to reality television — the whole nation can share the moment.
U.S. Army Sgt. Garrett Huitt, his wife April and their children Aaric and Kendall will be featured in the TLC broadcast of “Surprise Homecoming” Monday night at 9 p.m. Central Time.
The series, which is hosted by Billy Ray Cyrus, features surprise military homecomings. The hour-long show features three such “reunions,” including the Huwitt family homecoming that took place March 15.

Construction begins at elementary campuses

A different kind of school work is beginning at Big Spring Independent School District.

While students and teachers prepare for summer vacation, construction work on four new elementary campuses is beginning in earnest.

Crews have begun preparing the sites for three of the four new schools in recent days, and the pace of work will only increase in the coming weeks, BSISD officials said.

20th anniversary of Vietnam Memorial planned Mnday

Memorial Day will mark the 20th anniversary of the Big Spring Vietnam Memorial. The day will be commemorated with an 11 a.m. ceremony at the memorial.

“We need to pay tribute to all those who lost their lives,” Clarance Hartfield Jr., Vietnam Memorial board member said. “We pay tribute to the men and women still serving and we need to not forget those who lost their lives for us.”

Sonny Choate, United States Air Force, will be the keynote speaker and Tim McKinnon, United States Army, will be the guest speaker at the event.

Memorial Day service set for Trinity Memorial Park

As the country prepares to honor its fallen heroes next week, officials with Trinity Memorial Park are planning a patriotic Memorial Day display and ceremony that features more than 120 full-size U.S. flags and hundreds of smaller flags.

Set for 2 p.m. Monday, May 30, officials with the local memorial park will hold a Memorial Day ceremony to honor the men and women who have given their lives in defense of America, according to Trinity Memorial Park Facility Manager Phillip Welch.
