Old Settler Reunion starts Saturday

Rodeo week is a big one for Howard County residents, especially the old settlers.

The 87th Annual Settlers Reunion will conclude rodeo week, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 18 at the Heritage Museum.

“It started out as a big family reunion for residents of Glasscock and Howard counties and it has evolved over the years,” Museum Director Nancy Raney said.

Hot fun in Forsan

ORSAN — The splash is back.

Forsan Independent School District's swimming pool, which has offered a way for area residents to beat the heat for several years, is once again open for business.

The pool's annual summer run began Memorial Day and will last until August, FISD Superintendent Randy Johnson said.

Officials caution: Be safe in the water

As temperatures heat up, many area residents will turn their attention to local lakes and swimming pools to try to keep cool. However, according to officials with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, fun in the water can quickly turn deadly without proper supervision for children.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• AARON KEITH HILL, 24, of 1304 Stanford, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• STEVEN VALENCIA GAMBOA, 27, of 506 N. Nolan, was arrested Tuesday on charges of driving while license suspended/invalid – no insurance and failure to maintain financial responsibility.
• GILBERT JOSHUA MUNOZ, 25, of 2603 Ent, was arrested Tuesday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and a warrant from another agency.

Saddle up! Rodeo's coming

It's time to cowboy up.

The 78th Big Spring Cowboy Reunion and Rodeo is back for three nights — June 16,17 and 18 — at the Big Spring Rodeo grounds.

“We are trying something new this year,” Big Spring Cowboy Reunion and Rodeo board member Derek Wash said. “With the hot temperatures especially, we thought we would cut out the parade and do a Rodeo Kick Off instead.”

Focusing on the children

Knowing how to anticipate, prevent and manage certain situations can go a long way to raising a well-rounded child.

Mike Foster, trainer for a World for Children, had a training session Friday morning for area foster families. The three-hour session focused on trauma informed prevention.

“These kids need highly skilled caregivers and we are here to help people get the knowledge base,” Foster said. “Investment parenting is a big key. These kids have to know you have something invested in it as well.”

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• MELVIN WILLIAM BIDDLE, 48, of 908 W. Fourth St., was arrested Monday on a charge of criminal mischief.
• ALLEN TRISTAN JACKSON, 26, of Lubbock, was arrested Monday on warrants for disregarding a stop sign and failure to appear.
• CHARLES ALLEN ROBINSON, 49, of 434 Dallas, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• AARON KEITH HILL, 24, of 1304 Stanford, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• THEFT was reported:
In the 1200 block of E. 11th Place.

With temperatures having already eclipsed the 100-degree mark, officials with the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) are urging Texans to take precautions.

Emily Palmer, spokesperson for DSHS, said the elderly, the very young, people with chronic diseases and those without access to air conditioning are those most likely to suffer in extremely hot weather.

Relay For Life has new leaders for 2012

The Howard/Glasscock Relay For Life will have a new look in 2012, with Manny Negron assuming the role of chair of the Relay Committee. Negron, claims supervisor at the local Wal-Mart, has previously served as Team Recruitment co-chair.

Debbye ValVerde, executive director of Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce, who has co-chaired the Survivor Committee, has been named regional Hero of Hope and plans to assist Negron in that role. She has been active in the Salazar family’s sponsorship of the Candle of Hope for several relays.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• FRANK FIERRO JR., 63, of 603 N.W. Fifth St., was arrested Saturday on a charge of public intoxication.
• MELISSA GUERRERO WILLIAMS, 32, of Lamesa, was arrested Saturday on a charge of disorderly conduct – language.
• RUBEN ROJAS JR., 36, of 800 S. Nolan, was arrested Saturday on charges of driving while intoxicated – second offense and driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
