The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• DANIELLE MARIE RAWLS, 28, of 903 Saunders was arrested Tuesday on a warrant from another agency.
• CRUZ JESUS CASTILLO, 41, of 1512 Wood Street was arrested Tuesday on a warrant from another agency.
• THEFT was reported in the 200 block of Main.
In the 400 block of E. Fourth St.
• ASSAULT was reported in the 1600 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard.

House heavily damaged in fire

Firefighters with the Big Spring Fire Department and Howard County Volunteer Fire Department battled blazes around the intersection of Second Street and San Jacinto for much of Monday evening, as a structure fire ignited several grass fires in the area.

The structure fire, which was reported at approximately 5:30 p.m. at a home located behind the Big Spring Harley Davidson dealership, destroyed much of the home, including a shed and garage structure that housed several vehicles.

Local woman receives children's advocate award

The CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer appreciation banquet proved to be an emotional experience for Big Spring resident and recipient of the Dedicated and Deserving Award, Ann Townsend.

Townsend attended the March 31 banquet not expecting to receive the recognition she did. She was one of the two Howard County CASA volunteers recognized at the event.

“It was the most humbling and biggest honor of my life,” Townsend said. “It was completely unexpected.”

Five BSHS students advance to state academic meet

A drop in classification and a move to a different regional site did little to deter five members of Big Spring High School’s University Interscholastic League Academic Team from qualifying for the state meet.

“We were a bit concerned about this year’s regional competition,” Academic Coordinator Jennifer Adams said. “We knew what to expect at the 4A Regional competition, and we knew that this year was going to be a whole different situation.”

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• MICHAEL NEAL ROBERTS, 39, of 2500 Cheyenne, was arrested Monday on a warrant for failure to maintain financial responsibility.

The Howard County Sheriff’s Office reported the following activity:
Note — Officials with the Howard County Jail reported having 72 inmates at the time of this report.
• MICHAEL NEAL ROBERTS, 39, was transferred to the county jail Monday by the BSPD on a charge of failure to maintain financial responsibility.

Cancer survivors sought for Relay

Survivors wanted! That’s the word from the Howard/Glasscock Relay For Life tri-chairwomen of the Survivor Committee, which lists and provides for anyone who has had cancer.

“After all, this is about the people who have survived cancer and are celebrating more birthdays,” affirmed Bonnie Miller, Koila Strickland, and Debbye ValVerde.

“We sent out a mailing that incorrectly stated the deadline to register to get a purple shirt, “ said Strickland, “but the fact is we will take survivors’ names even at the Relay.”

Big Spring Rotary Club to sponsor putt-putt fund-raiser

Calling all grandparents, grandchildren, parents and kids.

The Big Spring Rotary Club is having its first putt-putt tournament to benefit PolioPlus. The tournament is set for April 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Park and Putt Family Fun Center, located on South U.S. Highway 87.

Suspect caugt after 40-mile chase

A Sterling City man was taken to the emergency room at Scenic Mountain Medical Center after crashing his vehicle on Gregg Street following a car chase with law enforcement officials that lasted more than 40 miles.
According to Howard County Sheriff Stan Parker, local law enforcement officials received a call from officers in Sterling City at approximately 2:30 p.m.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• BRENDA DAWN CHILDERS, 29, of 2403 Carlton, was arrested Saturday on charges of speeding and failure to appear.
• JAMEY SCOTT JOHNSON, 48, transient, was arrested Saturday on charges of pedestrian failing to yield the right of way to a vehicle and standing in roadway to solicit a ride.
• RAUL GONZALES, 59, of 1806 Owens, was arrested Saturday on a warrant from another agency and a warrant for assault – family violence.

State hospital honors top volunteers

Steve Smith presented the women of Salem Baptist Church with the Jack Y. Smith Award Thursday during Big Spring State Hospital’s Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon.

The luncheon, “Touching Lives, Lifting Spirits,” recognized approximately 100 volunteers who have raised more than $1.5 million in the past 10 years for the patients at Big Spring State Hospital through fundraisers, soliciting donations and operating The Chalet Resale Shoppe.
