Odessa forensics center closes, leaving Howard County in lurch

The last-minute closing of the Permian Basin Forensic Center — which had been providing autopsies for Howard County since Texas Tech University shut down its forensic services department — has local officials scrambling to procure necessary services.

According to Justice of the Peace Kathryn Wiseman, her office was notified Tuesday the Odessa-based center would be closing its doors the following day for a number of different reasons.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• CHRIS ALAN NIX, 27, of 428 Hillside Dr., was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
• DANIEL BRADLEY GRISSOM, 21, of Clyde, was arrested Thursday on a charge of driving while license invalid – DWI related.
• LORIE ANN AVINA, 39, of 1901 S. Runnels, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
• VICENTA JULIA SALAZAR, 41, of 212 E. Robinson, was arrested Thursday on a charge of theft – shoplifting.

• First Church of the Nazarene community wide Easter egg hunt, at the Old Settler’s Pavilion in Comanche Trail Park at 10 a.m. Saturday. After the hunt, hot dogs and refreshments will be provided.

•GEO is sponsoring Saturday’s Glitter-N-Chrome Easter Fun Run, a fund-raiser at the Hog Heaven Party Barn to benefit Special Olympics. Activities begin with a poker run at 11 a.m., a car, pickup and motorcycle show at noon and live bands at 3 p.m.

Child indecency suspect turns himself in

A Howard County man was taken into custody Tuesday evening after turning himself over to law enforcement officials on a charge of indecency with a child – sexual contact.

William Waddill, 52, was arrested shortly after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and charged with indecency with a child – sexual contact, according to officials with the Howard County Sheriff's Office.

GEO to host poker run

GEO is sponsoring a poker run and party Saturday to benefit Special Olympics.

The Glitter-N-Chrome Easter Fun Run will be held at the Hog Heaven Party Barn at 3910 W. Highway 80. The poker run will begin at 11 a.m. Fee is $20 per hand.

The “party” gets going at noon with an all-class car and bike show. Registration is $10 per vehicle.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• KIMBERLY MARIE CASTILLO, 27, of 1000 Howell, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid – no insurance.
• TEPHANIE MCCORMICK, 37, of 3304 W. Highway 80, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for no inspection certificate and a warrant from another agency.
• JAMES PATRICK THOMPSON, 39, of 2300 S. Monticello, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for theft.

Dunn case: DA hasn't received porn evidence

Officials with 118th District Court say child pornography allegedly found on a computer confiscated as part of the missing person investigation of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn haven't yet been submitted to their office, the next step in the prosecutorial process.

Bunny alert: Easter egg hunts set for Saturday

The Easter bunny is coming.

Two community wide Easter egg hunts are certain to have children hopping in Big Spring Saturday.

The first will be at 10 a.m. at the Old Settler's Pavilion in Comanche Trail Park. First Church of the Nazarene will sponsor the event and provide hot dogs and drinks afterward.

Starting at 2 p.m., Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veteran's Home will be having its eighth annual community Easter egg hunt and festivities.

Local man honored for CASA work

The timing just fell into place for Brad Burt, Travel Centers of America general store manager and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer.

Burt was sworn-in as a volunteer in January 2008 and has been working with the same case.

The work Burt has put in since becoming a volunteer has not gone unnoticed. He was honored with the best mentor award at the CASA volunteer appreciation banquet March 31.

• DANIELLE MARIE RAWLS, 28, of 903 Saunders was arrested Tuesday on a warrant from another agency.
• CRUZ JESUS CASTILLO, 41, of 1512 Wood Street was arrested Tuesday on a warrant from another agency.
• THEFT was reported in the 200 block of Main.
In the 400 block of E. Fourth St.
• ASSAULT was reported in the 1600 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard.
