Kid Print to be featured at Health Fair 2011

Expect the best, but prepare for the worst.

That's the reasoning behind Kid Print, just one of the activities available Saturday at Health Fair 2011.

“In today's world, who knows what is going to happen?” said Big Spring Police Department Lt. Terry Chamness. “This is an excellent way to document your child in case something ever does happen.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• MARCUS EMORY STURGILL, 22, of 1216 E. 15th St., was arrested Saturday on a charge of no driver's license – when unlicensed.
• CASEY RAY BRACKETT, 19, of 1204 Pennsylvania, was arrested Saturday on a charge of possession of marijuana – two ounces or less.
• LEONARD RAY DEANDA, 19, of Abilene, was arrested Saturday on a warrant from another agency.
• DAMIAN WESLEY BAILEY, 20, of 538 Westover Rd. Apt. 154, was arrested Saturday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

Trash-Off has youthful look

A whole lot of trash makes a huge success.

Saturday was the Don't Mess With Texas annual Trash Off. The turnout included more young people than in past years, according to Trash-Off coordinator Pat Simmons.

“This year was a huge success, especially because of the youth,” said Simmons, member of Keep Big Spring Beautiful, which sponsored the event locally.

Big Spring High School will send a dozen or more students to University Interscholastic League Region I Academic Contest, set for April 15-16 on the Texas Tech University campus.Students advanced from the District 5-3A contest last week.

Spring cleaning will take on a whole new scope in the Crossroads area Saturday, as Keep Big Spring Beautiful and local volunteers get ready to spruce up the community during the annual Don't Mess With Texas Trash-Off.

“Keep Texas Beautiful is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, which has each state scheduled for a clean-up from March 1 through May 31,” said longtime Trash-Off coordinator Pat Simmons. “So, Texas always works on the first Saturday in April unless Easter falls on that week-end.

Positive reports highlight EDC meeting

Progress reports — all positive — dominated a meeting of the Big Spring Economic Development Corporation this week.

Board members received an update from Howard College representative Kinsey Hansen concerning a technical program curriculum started in late 2009.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• AMANDA NICOLE EDMONDSON, 22, of 3224 Cornell, was arrested Thursday on warrants for expired license plate, failure to appear (three counts), failure to maintain financial responsibility and no driver's license – when unlicensed.
• JOHN MICHAEL EDMONDSON, 38, of 3224 Cornell, was arrested Thursday on charges of driving while license invalid, assault – family violence (two counts and criminal mischief.

Officials hope to broaden scope of Dunn investigation

COLORADO CITY — Finding the right words may get them somewhere.

At least that's what Colorado City City Manager Pete Kampfer said at a press conference here Wednesday morning concerning 13-year-old Hailey Dunn, who has been missing since Dec. 27.

“We certainly want to locate Hailey,” Kampfer said. “At this point we want to find Hailey and we have to do something to get us to a new level.”

Powwow to be unique celebration

Area residents curious about the customs and traditions of Native Americans will get a chance to see first hand how the first Americans have fun, as the Big Spring Powwow gets ready to once again take over the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum Saturday and Sunday.

The Powwow — a Native American tradition that includes competitive dancing and other activities — will begin Saturday with gourd dancing at 10 a.m., according to Big Spring Powwow Committee Treasurer Connie Lesser, and continue throughout the day.

Water conservation topic of mini-seminar

Water conservation has been moved to the forefront of a lot of issues.

Johansen's Nursery is hosting Water Conservation in the Landscape Friday at 6 p.m. for residents who are wanting to find out how to conserve water. There will also be time alloted for a question and answer session.

“It's going to come down to sustaining a good, viable water source,” Steve Parish, sales distributor for Gard'n Wise said. “If the water dries up, industry dries up, jobs dry up and people move away. It's a lot more than having green grass.”
