Cars, Stars and Handlebars fund-raiser is Saturday

Money generated from the Fifth Annual Cars, Stars and Handlebars fund-raiser will assist Big Spring State Hospital customers and their families with the construction of a Family Visitation Center.

Customers and their families don’t have an ideal area set aside for quality visitation, said Billie Christie director of community relations.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• KENDRA MICHELLE MATTHEWS, 29, of 3701 Connally St., was arrested Saturday on warrants for possession of alcohol by a minor and failure to appear.
• JEREMY STEVEN THROWER, 27, of 206 Circle, was arrested Saturday on warrants for driving without being secured by safety belt and failure to maintain financial responsibility.
• ISREAL ALVAREZ, 25, of 1504 Chickasaw, was arrested Saturday on a warrant from another agency.

Snakes take center stage

Snakes and daredevils have taken over the Howard County Fairbarns.

The 47th Annual AMBUCS Rattlesnake Roundup is in full swing. There are snake skinning and milking demonstrations and the opportunity to savor some fried rattlesnake. Professional snakehandler Jackie Bibby is back again for the snake shows.

The arts and crafts show and flea market will continue from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday as well. Admission to the arts and craft show is free. Roundup admission is $5 per adult and $3 for children ages 4-11 years old.

Howard College trustees meet Monday

Howard College trustees will hear good news and bad news when they convene at 12:30 p.m. Monday in the Student Union Building's Tumbleweed Room.

The good? Construction projects are coming along well.

The bad? The scuttlebutt on state appropriations is anything but promising. The latter wasn't totally unexpected, but that makes the news no easier to deal with considering Howard College is facing millions of dollars in budget cuts.

Joint law enforcement center on commissioners' agenda

Howard County commissioners are expected discuss a proposed joint law enforcement center that would house the sheriff's office and city police department during their Monday meeting, as the county looks to move forward with the project.

Members of the Big Spring City Council recently held a meeting alongside Howard County commissioners to present the proposed center — which would be located at the newly built county jail, located on W. Highway 80 — to the public.

Elrod's closing temporarily to repair storm damage

While the downpour of rain received by the Crossroads area March 18 helped with the ongoing drought, at least one Big Spring business came up short during the storm.

Officials with Elrod's Furniture announced this week the local business would be closing its doors — temporarily — to make repairs caused by the storm, which caused extensive damage through the retail business.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday.
• DAWN CHERIE HARTFIELD, 38, of 2509 Gunter, was arrested Friday on a warrant from other agency.
• BARNEY KIP EDENS, 31, of 605 Linda Lane, was arrested Friday on a warrant for failure to maintain financial responsibility, expired license plate, expired motor vehicle inspection certification.
• PETER MARCELLO ROGERS, 27 of 3007 Collins, was arrested Friday on three warrants from other agencies, failure to appear and failed to maintain financial responsibility.

Rattler roundup this weekend

It's time for slithery, hissing creatures to take over the fairgrounds.

The 47th Annual Rattlesnake Roundup and Arts and Crafts Show and Flea Market is set for this weekend. The roundup will once again take place at the Howard County Fair Barns and feature professional snake handlers.

The snake shows, demonstrations and races begin at 10 a.m. and last until 6 p.m., on Saturday. Sunday the doors will be open from noon to 5 p.m. The arts and crafts show will run during the same time as the roundup.

• MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ, 18, of 410 Aylesford, was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication by a minor.
• KENNETH ODIS LEWIS, 56, of 1704 Hilltop, was arrested Thursday on warrants for failure to appear and driving without a safety belt.
• DAWN CHERIE HARTFIELD, 38, of 2509 Gunter, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
• ROBERT RUBEN SANCHEZ, 46, of 1023 Stadium, was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.

New exhibit to open at museum

Take a trip down memory lane, courtesy of the Heritage Museum.

“Then and Now” is a pictorial comparison of what Big Spring used to be and what it has become. Accompanying the exhibit is a pictorial book by the same name: "Big Spring Then and Now," including 100 photos.

“We get a lot of requests for photographs and we are hoping that this will fill that need,” said Tammy Schrecengost, Heritage Museum curator.
