Historic hotel on the mend

Officials with the Settles Hotel Development Company say they have a tight schedule ahead of them, but still expect to have the renovation of the historic Settles Hotel completed by the end of 2011.

Kris Ryan, SHDC manager, said the project has faced some hurdles recently — including freezing weather — but is making a great deal of progress.

$10,000 raised by Eagles for WTC Children in Need Fund

West Texas Centers and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3188 raised $10,680 during Ninth Annual Children-In-Need Chili Cook-off Jan. 29 at the Eagles Lodge.

Close to 40 cooks participated in the cook-off, which awarded prizes to the top 10 entrants.

The chili cook-off has grown in popularity as evidenced by the number of participants and visitors who pay to sample the chili, said Landon Sturdivant, West Texas Centers Chief Operating Officer.

• STOLEN VEHICLE was reported in the 400 block of E. Fourth Street.
• HIT AND RUN was reported in the 3600 block of La Junta Drive.
• HARASSMENT was reported in the 1800 block of Hearn.

The Howard County Sheriff’s Office reported the following activity:

Lights out: High demand prompts outages across most of Texas

Rolling 15-minute blackouts began early this morning through much of the Crossroads area as the Electric Reliability Council of Texas implemented outages statewide in response to high demand following an ice storm.

Oncor spokeswoman Jaeamy Molina said the structured outages began around 6 a.m. She told The Associated Press that the Dallas-based utility is complying with a power emergency declared by ERCOT, which operates the electric grid and manages the deregulated market for 75 percent of Texas.

VAMC healing center: A journey of recovery

The VA Medical Center's new Veteran's Healing Center offers more than just treatment to vets suffering from homelessness, substance abuse, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and mental illness — hope and home are also on the menu.

Open house and dedication for the new 40-bed facility was held Tuesday and officials touted it as an entirely new way to help treat veterans suffering from the above-listed conditions. The center is the direct result of a federal review conducted several years ago.

Four Chaplains service set Thursday

Veterans of the U.S. armed forces who died during the previous year will be honored Thursday morning during the Four Chaplains Memorial Service at First Baptist Church under the direction of the Big Spring VA Medical Center.

The memorial service — which is named after four U.S. Army chaplains who sacrificed their lives to save others when the U.S.A.T. Dorchester was sunk by a German U-boat in 1943 — will get under way at 11 a.m. In the main chapel at the local church, according to VA Chaplain Dean Thomas.

• MARIO GABRIEL ANASTACIO, 38, of 1511 S. Lancaster, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• RONALD LEE COVINGTON, 31, of 2704 Apache, was arrested Monday on a warrant for accident involving damage to a vehicle.
• BURGLARY OF A BUILDING was reported in the 2100 block of S. Gregg Street.
• BURGLARY OF A HABITATION was reported:
In the 4200 block of Hamilton.
In the 3600 block of Connally.

Winter storm blasts area

February 1, 2011

Recent mild winter weather came to a close in the Crossroads area Monday evening as a massive winter storm caused temperatures to drop throughout the area.

Residents woke up to a formidable dusting of snow, prompting most public schools to delay classes, then cancel them altogether. Big Spring, Coahoma, Forsan, Grady and Sands school districts all canceled classes, as did Howard College.

Throughout Big Spring, private schools and clinics either delayed opening or decided to remain closed.
