Famiy, friends wait for answers as probe continues

COLORADO CITY — Frustration continues to mount among friends and family still hoping for the safe return of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn, who went missing from her home here Dec. 27.

Dunn has been the focus of a region-wide search since her mother, Billie Dunn, reported her missing to the Colorado City Police Department Dec. 28. Searches of fields and abandoned structures have been conducted in Colorado City, as well as numerous nearby communities, including Dunn, Abilene, Odessa and Big Spring.

ISD board filings under way

Candidate filings have been few and far between in area school trustee races.

Monday was the first day for prospective candidates to file for the May 14 school board elections and few people have thrown their hats into the ring as of yet.

School districts in Big Spring, Coahoma, Forsan, Stanton and Ackerly will hold trustee elections this May. Candidates have until March 14 to file their paperwork to get their names on the ballot. Filings can be done at the respective districts' business offices during normal operating hours.

Invasion suspect arrested

A suspect in the June 5 home invasion in the 600 block of State Street was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery Tuesday, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to more than a half-dozen.

Aaron Joe Guzman, 19, was arrested Tuesday by the HCSO on a Big Spring Police Department warrant for aggravated robbery and a motion to revoke probation for possession of a controlled substance, according to law enforcement officials.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• RUSSELL WAYNE CLAY, 50, of 1205 Lancaster, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• GARY LEE SMALE JR., 36, of 2504 Kelly, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of violation of a protective order – family violence.
• RICHARD LEE BEATTY, 26, of 508 Young, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of assault causing bodily injury – family violence.
• STEVEN ANDREW LOPEZ, 33, of 2412 Alabama, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant from another agency.

Petition drive moves along

The Big Spring City Council may have given up on putting a vote on term limits and initiatives and referendums before voters in May, but the Concerned Citizens Council isn't quite ready to throw in the towel on the issue.

Members of the CCC are in the process of collecting signatures from municipal voters to force city officials to hold an election in May to determine the fate of the issues in the Crossroads area.

Ex-lawman to sign copies of book here

Former Big Spring and Howard County law officer Mike Eggleston will be at the Heritage Museum on Wednesday, signing copies of his book, “Distorted Pillars.”

Written under his pen name, Mike McKee, the book follows the career of Mike Evans, who strikes out at anything he considers unethical, unfair or unpatriotic.

County preps for joint meeting

Utility usage, seal coating bids and jail issues topped the Howard County commissioners agenda Monday morning, as the court prepares for its joint meeting with the city of Big Spring Feb. 28 to discuss the possibility of combining the Sheriff's Department and Big Spring Police Department under one roof.

Commissioners touched upon the meeting scheduled later this month, which will include county and city officials. The joint meeting is set to discuss the possibility of housing both law enforcement agencies at the Howard County Jail and sharing resources.

• THEODORE LEE FLORES, 32, of Levelland, was arrested Monday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
• SCOTTY KEITH LEATHERWOOD, 45, of 1004 Sycamore, was arrested Monday on a warrant for speeding.
• SAMANTHA MARIE PAYNE, 27, of 303 E. Ninth St., was arrested Monday on a charge of possession of marijuana – two ounces or less.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• JOHNNY RAY PAYNE, 31, of 1509 E. Stadium, was arrested Saturday on warrants for public intoxication, being in the city park after hours and riding without a safety belt.
• GREGORY SHANE ROBERSON, 28, of 711 Washington, was arrested Saturday on warrants for assault – family violence and a warrant from another agency.
• IRMA MORIN YANEZ, 37, of 1610 Cardinal, was arrested Saturday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.

Pianist to perform here for CARE fund benefit

You might not expect to find an Italian pianist of international acclaim in the Crossroads area, but that will be exactly the case Feb. 25, as Francesco Attesti will perform a piano concert to benefit the local CARE Fund.

Attesti — who is considered one of the finest interpreters of the Romantic and early 20th Century Repertoire — will be performing a program largely based on the works of Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin at the Hall Center for the Arts on the Howard College campus at 7:30 p.m.
