Sort of.

Santa didn't have his reindeer with him Saturday, but he had plenty of “hogs.”

The Harley-Davidson-riding Cossacks Motorcycle Club escorted Santa around town to help him dispense toys and food to needy families as part of the group's annual Christmas Toy Run Saturday morning.

Despite cold temperatures, a large contingent of riders were on hand to participate in the event, which the Cossacks have held for almost 20 years.

Financial dark cloud looming over school districts

December 17, 2010

A storm is coming, and it has nothing to do with the weather.

Big Spring Independent School District officials are awaiting with a degree of trepidation the start of the 2011 session of the Texas Legislature. The reason? A projected multi-billion dollar state budget shortfall that's liable to have a chilling effect on any agency dependent on state funds.

BSISD Superintendent Steven Saldivar braced school trustees for some possible bad news during their monthly meeting Thursday night in the high school board room.

Marisa's dream deferred; academy makes it possible

December 17, 2010

A dream deferred is not always a dream denied.

Four years ago, Marisa Torres came oh, so close to a high school diploma, which would have been the first anyone from her family had ever earned. But some bad science scores on a state test denied her that diploma, so she walked away from school, and stayed away.

But Marisa took a second swipe at that elusive diploma this school year, and with the help of a new Big Spring High School program and some dedicated teachers — but mostly through her own determination — she collected that sheepskin.
