Hot temps + hot cars = a tragedy

April 7, 2015

The car is too hot for the tot.
Within the last week, Howard County has seen temperatures in the 90s and even as high as 100 degrees. It is beginning to feel like Summer in West Texas.
With the weather getting warmer, it is important to remember the risks of leaving children and pets unattended in vehicles.

BSPD officer injuried

A Big Spring officer was injured Sunday after attempting to stop a driver of a vehicle who was recklessly driving in the parking lot of a local bar.
The officer was treated at Scenic Mountain Medical Center and later released, according to a new release from the Big Spring Police Department.

Health Fair 2015 coming Friday

Self defense demonstrations, health checks, eye screenings and a bicycle rodeo are just a few of the activities planned for the 2015 Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce Health Fair.

AARP tax help ends Monday

Tax procrastinators beware, April 15 is rapidly coming.

In fact, the AARP tax assistance program will hold one more session before they put away the calculators and store their pencils until next year.

“Monday is the last day we will offer the program,” said Ray Alexander who coordinates the AARP tax assistance program. “We will try to help as many people as we can Monday who have all their paperwork but if they walk in 5 minutes to 12 p.m., well, they will need to go somewhere else.”

BSHS band schedules Eastertide concert

The award-winning Big Spring High School honor band will perform for a midday, special Eastertide concert at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.

Capping off a stellar year for the band program which earned awards in both marching and concert contests, the public is invited to attend the concert at 12:05 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Church, 1001 S. Goliad St.

Easter egg hunts on tap for weekend

All Easter eggs beware; the hunt is on.

Several community-wide Easter egg hunts will be held in Howard County Saturday.

The First Church of the Nazarene’s annual Easter Egg Hunt will begin at 11 a.m. at the Belaski Pavilion located at the Comanche Trail park. The event is free to the public and will include special guests.

Accident claims life of local man

April 2, 2015

GARDEN CITY — A Big Spring man was killed Tuesday in a two-vehicle accident 15 miles north of Garden City.

According to a Department of Safety news release, Cody Rhea Hare, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene by Howard County Justice of the Peace Bennie Green.

At 2:18 p.m. Tuesday, emergency personnel responded to a call of a two-vehicle accident approximately 15 miles north of Garden City on Ranch Road 33.

Local man arrested in Tuesday shooting of wife

A 25-year-old Big Spring man remained in jail this morning waiting on a bond hearing after his arrested by Big Spring Police for allegedly shooting his wife.

Farley Garret Lloyd was arrested Tuesday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury to a family member, according to police reports this morning. The incident occurred Tuesday evening in the 700 block of Tulane. The wounded female victim, whose name is not being released at this time, was shot in the neck.

FISD pre-K, kindergarten sign-ups start Monday

Forsan Elementary has scheduled Pre-K and kindergarten pre-registration for Monday through April 10.

Paperwork can be filled out in the elementary office. The school office will be open for registration between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

In order to be eligible for Pre-kindergarten, the student must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2015. To register for kindergarten, students must be five years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2015.
