Council: No grooming pets, people at home

Big Spring’s City Council has nixed a proposed ordinance which would allow beauticians and pet groomers to work out of their homes.

Council members rejected the ordinance by a 4-3 vote after lengthy debate during their Tuesday night meeting. Raul Marquez Jr., Bobby McDonald, Raul Benavides and Marvin Boyd voted against the measure, while it was supported by Mayor Larry McLellan, Carmen Harbour and Justin Myers.

The ordinance would have allowed licensed beauty salon operators and pet groomers to operate the businesses from home under certain circumstances.

McDaniel named to fill vacant EDC seat

Local businesswoman Kay McDaniel has been named the newest member of the Big Spring Economic Development Corporation’s board of directors.

McDaniel was selected for the post from among 11 candidates by the Big Spring City Council during its Tuesday evening meeting.

She replaces Larry Rodgers, former CEO of Scenic Mountain Medical Center, who is relocating to the College Station area. She will serve on the EDC board until the end of September 2017.

State hospital to celebrate 75 years

Big Spring State Hospital will celebrate its 75th anniversary Wednesday with a public reception and ceremony reflecting on how the hospital has evolved since it opened in 1939.

The ceremony — “Paving Pathways to Recovery” — begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Allred Building Auditorium.

Seliger town hall meeting Oct. 22

Sen. Kel Seliger continues making his way fhrough the Panhandle, South Plains and Permian Basin in preparation for the 84th Texas Legislature that convenes in January.

Seliger, from Amarillo, narrowly defeated fellow Republican and Midland Mayor Mike Canon in the party primaries March 4. And though he faces Libertarian Party of Texas candidate Steven Gibson in the Nov. 4 general election, no Libertarian has won — or come close to winning — a legislative seat or statewide office in Texas.

Northside Center provides vets with helping hand

A local organization is providing services for U.S. veterans to help them to get back on their feet.

Every Friday, a group of veterans from the Big Spring VAMC travel to the Northside Community Center (NCC) to attend classes on basic computer skills, receive legal aid counseling or just to use the center’s computer resources to check e-mail and browse the internet.

Walker, Bowles family top honorees at Ag luncheon

Royce Walker and Karla and Don Bowles were the top honorees at Thursday’s annual Ag Appreciation Luncheon.

Walker was honored at the Chamber of Commerce-sponsored luncheon as the Agriculture Producer of the Year, while the Bowles, owners of Howard County Feed and Supply, were awarded as Agriculture Business of the Year.

Old Sorehead Trade Days return Saturday and Sunday

STANTON — The historic downtown streets of Stanton will be packed to capacity this weekend with vendors hawking what they and bargain hunters hope are the best deals in the Permian Basin.

With 620 vendors filling nine city blocks and seven buildings, Shawna Burch, Old Sorehead Trade Days executive director, said the thrice-annual event is booked solid for vendor booths.
