Bird Poop: Red-tailed hawk succumbs to its wounds

December 28, 2010

On call during the first weekend of December, the officer had gone to pick up a large hawk during the afternoon. After securing the raptor in his truck, he drove back to the shelter. The opportunity to handle such a bird reminded him of his days at the San Antonio zoo and other facilities.

After notifying the game warden, the officer was given our number to call. Since Odessa’s animal control was officially closed, we arranged to meet on Sunday morning.

Surprised by the hands that suddenly pressed against its wings and heavy body, the bird used its large webbed feet to push against the man’s waist. With its long, sharp bill it nipped at his arms.

This is also the last column until we start purchasing new materials. Look for my return in late January!

Bird Poop: Gull maimed by hunter

November 23, 2010

Following the dirt road as it wandered through the deer lease was to be surprised by the occasional stock tank and pond hidden by the hilly terrain. By checking these oases, the driver could tell by footprints and scat the critters that had come to water.

As he had looked out over a large reservoir the previous week, he had seen a large flock of seagulls. While some searched the shoreline for insects, others relished floating on the surface
