Verna Mae Ashford

September 29, 2014

Verna Mae Ashford of Big Spring, Texas, went home to be with the Lord Friday, Sept. 19, 2014, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center at the age of 81 years old. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial following at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Howell (Hal) L. Boyd

Howell (Hal) L. Boyd, 84, of San Angelo, after a brief illness, went to join his Heavenly family on Sept. 26, 2014, in San Angelo, Texas.
He was born June 9, 1930, to Elmer and Iris (Howell) Boyd in Lamesa, Texas. On May 16, 1951, he married Joy Culp in Lamesa. They moved to Big Spring where Hal worked as the city manager for 11 years. Following retirement, they moved to San Angelo.

Glenn Joe Riley

Glenn Joe Riley of Garden City, Texas, died at home Sept. 27, 2014, after a short illness. Glenn Joe was born in Big Spring in 1940 but grew up in Garden City. After high school, Glenn Joe attended Howard County Junior College and then on to Texas Tech University where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering. Glenn Joe then moved to the Fort Worth area where he worked for Bell Helicopter as an electrical engineer. After retiring from Bell, he moved to Mesa, Ariz., where he began a new career as a tennis pro.

Jerry McElreath

Jerry McElreath, 66, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Private family services will be held at a later date.

He was born Nov. 28, 1947, in Big Spring, Texas to Beatrice (Jones) and Marvin C. McElreath. He was a lifetime resident of Big Spring, except for his nine years in the United States Army. He served two tours in Vietnam. He also lived a few years in Tucson, Arizona. He worked in construction. He was a Baptist.

He is survived by his sister Barbara Murphy and husband Dick of Big Spring; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy 'Dottie' Leffler

Dorothy “Dottie” Leffler, 69, of Big Spring, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2014, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, at Myers & Smith Chapel with Pastor Carroll Kohl officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. following the service.

Dorothy was born Sept. 26, 1944, to Anna and George Acton in Cascade, Idaho. She came to Big Spring in 1981 from Missouri. She married Jimmy Leffler Nov. 22, 1981 in Big Spring.

Jerry McElreath, 66, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

LaVera Alexander, 94, of San Angelo, formerly of Big Spring, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at The Springs Alzheimer's Special Care Center, in San Angelo. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring with her son, Jim Alexander, officiating.

LaVera was born July 10, 1920, in Hugo, Okla. to Fred and Annie Mae (Stewart) Hawkins and married Mack Gregory Alexander May 23, 1940, in Roscoe, Texas, where she grew up. Mack preceded her in death July 1, 1986.

Harold Etheridge Beaver

Harold Etheridge Beaver, age 91, of Odessa passed away on Sept. 22, 2014 in Big Spring, Texas at the Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez-Texas State Veteran’s Home.

Harold was born Sept. 4, 1923, to Hubert H. Beaver and Rose Mae Sifford Beaver in Hunt, Texas. He graduated from Kerrville Tivy High School and in 1951 he graduated from Baylor University with a business degree. He served in the United States Air Corp from 1945-1947.

W.D. Scott of Dripping Springs Texas, formerly of Big Spring, died on Sept. 21, 2014.

He is survived by his wife Gloria, daughter Kelly, son-in-law Steve, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.
