7 Lady Steer volleyball players earn all-district honors

November 30, 2010

The all-district honors for 5-3A volleyball were announced Tuesday and seven Big Spring players are represented on the list.

As a key component defensively for the Lady Steers, libero Valerie Ross nabbed top defensive specialist in the district. Setter/middle blocker Cerbi Ritchey, middle blocker Taylor Seaton and outside hitter Desiree Anderson made first-team all-district. These three were go-to players for kills this season.

Still going!

November 29, 2010

The Garden City Bearkats aren’t ones to waste opportunities or time.
So just because there were less than two minutes left in the second quarter, didn’t mean they should roll into halftime with a small lead over Ira.

Garden City had different plans en route to its 80-46 win over the Bulldogs in the six-man football state quarterfinal matchup at Memorial Stadium in Big Spring.

“I think we scored two touchdowns within a minute and 30 seconds just before the half, Garden City head coach Vance Jones said. “That was really huge.”

Area playoffs: 'Kats face undefeated Ira Saturday in Big Spring

November 26, 2010

GARDEN CITY — On Monday, all the hoopla from the Garden City Bearkats' emotional playoff win against Borden County was over. Head coach Vance Jones made sure of that.

“We’re already past that. We’ve already celebrated that,” Jones said. “We’re focused on the next challenge.”

The players have apparently heard Jones’ message and should take it seriously, considering another undefeated team will be across the field at 6 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Big Spring.

Late shot downs Lady Steers

November 24, 2010

By the middle of the third quarter, the Big Spring women’s basketball sideline couldn’t be any more excited and Steer Gym couldn’t be any louder.

Merkel was ahead the whole game until a Valerie Ross steal in between two Mackenzie Stone 3-pointers gave Big Spring its first lead of the night against Merkel at 35-34.

Things didn’t stay that way for the Lady Steers, though.

One for the ages: Fumbled snap helps Garden City edge Borden County

November 20, 2010

FORSAN — Once Borden County’s score brought the Coyotes within two of Garden City with 22 seconds left, the Bearkats were thinking overtime.
They didn’t see a fumbled snap on Borden County’s conversion attempt after that score coming.

“When they had a bad snap, I was just ‘Golly, I can’t believe that,’” Garden City head coach Vance Jones said after the 44-42 win. “It was just an awesome game.”

Offense sputters, Buffs lose to Holliday in playoffs

November 20, 2010

SWEETWATER — Defense just wasn’t enough this time for the Stanton Buffaloes.

Holliday upended the Buffs run in the area round of the UIL football playoffs Friday in Sweetwater 16-0.

All the Eagles needed was two touchdown runs from Tyler Cole and a safety to move on in the playoffs behind a defense that limited Stanton’s best option on offense.

“They took our running game away from us,” head coach John Peterson said. “They were aggressive. We came out and gave it everything we had. It just wasn’t the best Friday night.”

Area basketball roundup: Adams drops 42 on Permian, BSHS girls 4-0

November 20, 2010

Boys
Odessa Permian 71
Big Spring 65

Big Spring guard Luke Adams scored 42 points as the Steers dropped a close game to Odessa Permian at home.
A lot of Adams’ points came from solid free-throw shooting. The senior hit 18-of-19 shots from the free-throw line. Regardless, Adams performance impressed first-year head coach Cliff Thompson. Right behind Adams was Tristain Clay with 13 points.
Adams and Clay were also the top two scorers in the Steers’ season-opening win over Fort Stockton. Thompson said those two are turning out to be the go-to players as others continue to develop.

Borden-Garden City matchup brings fans to six-man football

November 19, 2010

GARDEN CITY — Name the time, date and place of the Garden City-Borden County football game and the urge to be there is evident.

Maybe more than most six-man football games, when these two teams hook up, fans flock to Gail, Garden City or in today’s case, Forsan at 7:30 p.m., hoping to see the epitome of six-man football.

The two teams faced each other in a 40-39 thriller during the regular season, with Garden City getting the upper hand. Now tonight, a lot more is on the line during the area round of the playoffs.

Holliday on tap for Stanton in playoffs

November 19, 2010

STANTON — Stanton was excited to be this far into the playoffs like many other teams. That ended quickly with a loss to Olton.

The Buffaloes don’t talk much about last year, making it a point to concentrate on what’s in front of them.

But with a senior laden squad and a strong defense, it’s safe to say the Buffs don’t want to let the chance to keep playing pass them by this time.
