COAHOMA â As Pete Acosta was trying to recall how many people have congratulated him on his selection to the 2010 Class 2A All-State Football team, another bystander shouted his name from afar, hoping to do the same.
Safe to say Coahoma is proud of what the senior has done.
Acosta was named second team all-state by the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors with three other defensive backs. He wasnât the only Bulldog on the list, either. Josh Castilaw earned honorable mention as an offensive lineman.
The Big Spring Lady Steers took care of business at home once again this season Tuesday. This time they cruised past Monahans 56-34 in Steer Gym for their 11th win of the season.
Like most games recently, this game was all about experimenting with different lineups and getting every player on the floor.
âWe started a different lineup, had an all junior lineup just to kind of look at that group and I thought they kind of got in there and got after it,â head coach Mike Warren said. âAlthough, the score was close
COAHOMA â In a game like this, a nine-point deficit looked like it was too far out of reach for the Coahoma Bulldogettes heading into the fourth quarter.
But they didnât want to go 0-2 in district play. The fear of that happening alone sparked Coahoma in a thrilling 46-45 win over Post in District 3-2A action Tuesday in Coahoma.
The Bulldogettes were down 39-30 heading into the fourth quarter, but battled back to tie it thanks to a few baskets from Minnie Goodblanket and a clutch shot from Haley Pace with about a minute left in the game.

The District 5-3A honors for football were announced Monday with Brownwood being the last team knocked out of the playoffs.
The Big Spring Steers had 12 players earn honors, four of them on first team all-district.
Receiver Mike Menefield, offensive lineman Jackson Watkins, defensive end Devante Lloyd and safety Dennis Merworth earned first team
all-district honors. Merworth also earned a nod for honorable mention at receiver.

GARDEN CITY â At the beginning of the 2010 season, Ian Schaefer wasnât quite sure the Garden City Bearkats would end up hoisting the UIL Six-Man Division I state championship trophy again.
At the very least, he didnât want to make a bold prediction. But the more this team came together, got better every week and stayed focused, the more Schaefer knew the Bearkats were on to something special.
GARDEN CITY â Garden City football players talk about head coach Vance Jones like heâs a family member.
Itâs just one way of putting his impact on the program in perspective.
âCoach Jones is like a second dad almost,â running back Josh Colunga said. âHeâs been there for us on and off the field. Heâs a great coach. He knows what heâs doing. He takes care of us a lot. Iâm glad I did it under his judgement and his coaching staff. The rest of the coaches are awesome and I just want to say thank you to all of them.â

GARDEN CITY â Garden City head coach Vance Jones remembers the last time his Bearkats lost vividly.
It was to Throckmorton in the beginning of the 2009 season and Jones remembers his players naturally being upset.
More good than harm came from that loss, though.
âThat loss was probably our motivation to work harder to get to play them again,â Jones said. âAfter the game, they said âCoach, we can beat them.â They worked hard and that was the driving engine that helped us get to that point and once we beat them, we said âHey, maybe we have a shot to go all the way.â

Big Spring guard Luke Adams wasnât fully aware how big his performance against Odessa Permian was on Nov. 19. Forty-two points was far from where he thought he finished.
âI really didnât,â the senior said. âThatâs the crazy thing about it. I didnât even know how many. I probably thought I had 20, maybe 25.
âI guess when youâre playing to win, you donât really care about points. You just care whatâs on that scoreboard.â
Maybe itâs that mindset that has opponents taking notice of Adams.
