Hawks back on court after layoff

December 31, 2010

Earl Diddle’s voice was hoarse after all the screaming he did in each of the five practices the Hawks have had the last three days.

The Howard College women’s basketball coach said the Hawks have been working hard, evidenced from Diddle’s hoarse voice. But it’s probably warranted considering the 27 days in between games for the Hawks.

The drought ends against South Mountain Community College at 2 p.m. Saturday in Phoenix. It’s the first of three games in Phoenix. Matchups against Phoenix College at 2 p.m. Sunday and Glenndale Community

Thompson believes Steers turning corner

December 30, 2010

After going 3-1 in the Fredricksburg tournament, Big Spring boys basketball coach Cliff Thompson believes he’s watching his team learn from the mistakes it made at the beginning of the season.

That’s good news, too, considering district play is about two weeks away.

“The first part of the season was up and down, but we’re kind of on a roll now,” Thompson said. “I think we’ve been improving all year.”

The Steers took care of Randolph 62-32, lost to St. Andrews 61-56, beat Rouse 65-55 and defeated Ingram 68-39 in the Fredricksburg tournament to move to 13-6 on the season.

Colunga, Chudej named district's MVP

December 30, 2010

The Garden City Bearkats were led by Josh Coulnga and Brett Chudej all season during their run to a second consecutive state championship.

So, it seems right the two swept the district's Offensive and Defensive MVP awards.

With the Six-Man Division I District 7 football honors being released, Coulnga was named Offensive MVP and Chudej, who regularly made plays at linebacker, was named the district's Defensive MVP.

The Bearkats had 13 players earn honors. Chudej, Reggie Halfmann, Ruben Mier and Brian Hirt earned multiple honors.

Coahoma, Stanton, Forsan rake in honors

December 21, 2010

Coahoma quarterback Tanner Ruiz and Stanton linebacker Grayson Gray won District 2-2A Offensive and Defensive MVP honors with the all-district selections being announced this week.

The Coahoma Bulldogs, including Ruiz, had 12 players earn honors.
Dakota Griffith was named first team running back, Hunter Williams was named first team tight end and Josh Castilaw, off his all-state selection, was named first team center.

Justin Coker nabbed second team fullback and Sheigh Cravens was second team receiver. Jacob Echavarria made the second team as an offensive lineman.

Forsan boys, girls beat Coahoma in rivalry games

December 18, 2010

Coahoma-Forsan boys
FORSAN — A big third quarter and a little bit too much speed was Coahoma’s undoing as Forsan got a big 47-39 win in District 3-2A play over the Bulldogs Friday in Forsan.

The story for the Bulldogs was the way they came out in the second half.

It was tied at 14 heading into the third quarter, but the game got away from Coahoma a little bit. CHS head coach Kim Nichols said his players couldn’t keep up in transition in the third and most notably, Forsan’s Ty Johnson was tough to slow down.

Steers cruise past Merkel

December 18, 2010

Merkel was going toe-to-toe with Big Spring heading into the second quarter, but in a flash, it looked like that never happened.

A strong second-quarter run propelled Big Spring past Merkel Friday 70-43 in the Steers’ first home game in almost a month.

Luke Adams led with 19 points, but Tristian Clay and Marc Segundo were as impressive with 14 and 10, respectively.

Guards make dangerous backcourt for BSHS

December 17, 2010

The inside game with Cerbi Ritchey and Diamond Mayes is almost unstoppable and the same could be said for Valerie Ross and Mackenzie

Stone’s shooting efficiency.
If that’s sounds like a double-edged sword opponents want no part of, how much more dangerous are the Big Spring Lady Steers with speed in the backcourt?

The answer: very dangerous. At least that’s what head coach Mike Warren is counting on with LaShaunte Anderson, Bridgette Tuitt and Logan Yarbar.

Round 1: Bulldogs, Buffs do battle in Forsan

December 17, 2010

Coahoma-Forsan girls
Coahoma head coach Mitzi Bell can remember how big the Forsan game was when she was in high school at Iraan. Forsan head coach Robert Hillger can remember close games decided by buzzer beaters between the two teams.

Both coaches know the Coahoma-Forsan game at 6 p.m. today in Forsan means something to the players, considering the close proximity between the two towns and the familiarity the players have with one another.
These two teams being the same district this year makes things even more exciting.

Defense focus for Thompson as Steers continue trek

December 16, 2010

The Big Spring Steers don’t play horrible defense. In some cases, they’re far from it.

But to first-year head coach Cliff Thompson, they can never be too good on the defensive side of the ball.

That’s one focus — among many — for the Steers as their third home game this season approaches. Thompson said the focus is starting to shift toward what the Steers have to do to get ready for District 5-3A play in January and at the top of his list is defense.
