Late shot sends Howard men past South Plains

January 11, 2011

The defending national champions just needed a little bit of daylight.

In Monday’s WJCAC opener, South Plains looked like the better team for most of the game, but once Howard College found an opportunity to steal a win, the Hawks didn’t waste it.

“We feel like we just got outplayed for three-fourths of the game,” Howard head coach Mark Adams said. “But the last eight minutes, we showed some aggression. We were much more physical with South Plains and we hit some big shots.”

Howard women stave off South Plains

Excuse the Howard College women’s basketball team for feeling a little thwarted in Monday’s WJCAC opener against South Plains.

The Hawks didn’t see a 2-3 zone defense at all in their first meeting with the Lady Texans in the WJCAC Pre-Conference Tournament, and they hadn’t seen one in a while. So they were a little surprised to see it Monday night.

“It kind of threw us off a little bit, but we got it under control,” said Twyla Ards, who had 10 points.
