October 28, 2011

The Forsan boys cross country team finished in first place in the district meet in Lubbock. This is the fourth consecutive district title for the Buffaloes and makes five out of the last six.

The boys had a perfect score, claiming the first five spots individually. Kyle Stevenson finished in first place overall with a time of 17:08, followed closely by second place finisher P.J. Horton with a time of 17:28.

Third place went to Tyler Evans with 17:35, while Matthew Mims took fourth place and Elgen Suazo took fifth place.

Lady Steers to face Vernon in playoffs

October 27, 2011

The Lady Steers clinched a playoff spot this week, defeating Brownwood in four games. Big Spring grabs the runner-up position for District 5-3A and will face the Vernon Lady Lions, District 6-3A's third place finisher either Oct. 31 or Nov. 1 in the Bi-District round of the playoffs.

The Lady Steers fell behind in the first game, eventually falling by a close 23-25 score. The games did not get any easier, but the girls of Big Spring forced things to go their way, winning three straight games by scores of 26-24, 25-23 and 27-25.

Buffaloes collide

October 27, 2011

The future of the Forsan Buffaloes is sitting calmly in their own hands. This week, the 5-3 Buffaloes (2-2 in district) will take on Stanton in a clash of area teams looking to distance themselves from the herd and make the playoffs.

Idalou and Coahoma have already clinched a place at the table, though who gets to say grace will not be determined until the two teams finally meet Nov. 4.

It would be easy to look past Stanton for Forsan head coach Jason Phillips — and look at next week's match-up with Hawley (2-2) — but the Forsan helmsman knows better.

Lady Steers make example of Greenwood

October 20, 2011

The Lady Steers took full advantage of a break in their district schedule to keep their skills sharp, defeating Greenwood in four games. After falling behind and losing the first game 20-25, the girls bounced back, taking the next three games 25-15, 25-18 and 25-17.

It was senior night at Steer Gym and the three graduating Lady Steers put up some impressive numbers for the hometown crowd.

Cerbi Ritchey led the team in three categories. The tall setter had 20 assists, 17 kills and 16 digs along with seven blocks and an ace.

A look at District 2-2A

October 20, 2011

District 2-2A is shaping up to go down to the wire this season with seven teams competing for three playoff spots. Right now, Idalou is sitting where they were predicted to be, undefeated (3-0) in district play. However, someone forgot to tell Coach Gardner's bunch out in Coahoma they are expected to finish in second place, not first. Currently, the Bulldogs are atop the district with a 4-0 district record after last week's thrilling 23-22 win at Forsan. Coahoma and Idalou are set to play Nov. 4 in the season finale.

Steers' final home game Friday

October 20, 2011

The 0-8 Big Spring Steers will be back in action Friday night, playing host to a well-rested Abilene Wylie football team. The Bulldogs had a bye this last week, after defeating Sweetwater 20-15 in their last game Oct. 7. Meanwhile, the Steers are coming off of a 28-6 loss in Sweetwater.

Last week offered a possible glimpse into the future of the Steers, with sophomore Devin Roberson playing almost the entire first half at quarterback.

October 18, 2011

The Big Spring Lady Steers upped their district record to 4-2 Friday when they defeated Sweetwater in four matches. Sweetwater would rally to take the third game, but the rest of the night belonged to the Lady Steers as they downed their district rival 25-15, 25-16, 22-25 and 25-14.

Mustangs halt Steers' stampede

October 15, 2011

SWEETWATER — The Big Spring Steers changed their offensive attack early in Friday night's district game in Sweetwater, but were unable to come up with a different result, as they fall to the Mustangs 28-6.

Garrett Stuteville hit Toby Rodgers on a 23-yard touchdown pass at the halfway point of the fourth quarter for Big Spring's only points, as the Black and Gold fall to 0-8 on the season.

Sweetwater was treated to a different looking offense than they might have expected early in the game, as Steers' sophomore Devin Roberson started at the quarterback position for Big Spring.

Coahoma, Forsan play game to the wire

October 15, 2011

FORSAN — Area 2A football fans could not have asked for a better game than the one played in Forsan Friday night. Both teams were undefeated in district play, setting the stage for a battle for all the marbles. When it was over, the Coahoma Bulldogs took a 23-22 victory home, advancing to a 4-0 district record, while the Buffaloes fall to 2-1.

After Justin Coker scored for the Bulldogs and then caught a pass from Tanner Ruiz for the two-point conversion, Forsan responded with 13 first quarter points of their own.

Forsan vs.Coahoma

October 13, 2011

Coahoma beats Forsan 56-0. The only thing needed to see these numbers on the scoreboard this week is to get the Delorean up to 88 mph and go back in time a year. Things should be a lot different when the Bulldogs travel to face the Buffaloes Friday night.

The 5-1 (2-0 in district) Forsan Buffaloes are riding a four-game win streak into this week's district match-up, while the Bulldogs, 4-3 (3-0), are riding a three-game streak of their own.
