February 26th
BRECKENRIDGE â The Big Spring Steers were hanging on by a thread for most of Fridayâs Class 3A area championship game against No. 4 Kennedale.
The Wildcats couldnât exactly put the Steers away early and the Steers couldnât seriously make a game out of it.
But like elite teams do, Kennedale wore down Big Spring on the way to a 74-43 win, ending the Steersâ season.
February 25th
The Big Spring Steers are trying not to put too much pressure on themselves as todayâs area championship matchup against No. 4 Kenndale at 8 p.m. in Breckenridge approaches.
After the Steers won Tuesdayâs bi-district playoff game against Bowie, head coach Cliff Thompson mentioned if Big Spring beats Kennedale, there wonât be any movies made labeling it as the greatest upset of all time.
The message has been simple: Donât be nervous, just believe.
Howard College womenâs basketball head coach Earl Diddle clearly was in a better mood by the end of Thursday night than he was before the regular season finale against Frank Phillips College started.
At one point, all he knew was New Mexico Junior College and Odessa College needed to lose and his team had to win if the Hawks wanted to return to the Region V Tournament. They could only control the latter.
However, with all the odds in the world against them, the Hawks took care of business and so did New Mexico and Odessaâs opponents. By the end of the night, Diddle was a happy man.

The Howard College womenâs basketball team needs a lot of help as far as making the Region V Tournament is concerned. Head coach Earl Diddle knows that much.
In order to clinch a berth, the Hawks not only have to take care of Frank Phillips at 5:45 p.m. today in Dorothy Garrett Coliseum, South Plains has to beat New Mexico Junior College and Midland College has to beat Odessa.
âWeâve got to do what weâve got to do and then weâre at the hands of these other people, which is not a real good feeling,â Diddle said. âBut thatâs the position weâre in.â

CISCO â Riding the wave of momentum that got them in the postseason â and guard Kevin Dunn â the Bowie Jackrabbits tested the Big Spring
Steers early in Mondayâs bi-district playoff game.
To combat that, the Steers didnât just rely on Luke Adams. There was Marc Segundo and Tristian Clay hitting big jumpers and Mike Menefield and Devante Lloyd dominating in the post.
Everything fell into place for the Steers on the way to a 77-47 win to start the boysâ Class 3A playoffs.
ODESSA â Tyler Fulton and Grayson Gray have been big for the Stanton Buffaloes all season.
So why would that change in Tuesdayâs bi-district playoff game against Kermit?
The two combined for 42 points in the Buffsâ 57-48 win at Odessa College in Odessa.
Stanton head coach Ken VanCuren said he was impressed with the way his team stepped up at the right time.
Everybody knows Garden City for its state championship football team, but the basketball version of the Bearkats might be ready to make some postseason noise, also.
Led by the senior duo of Aaron Long and Brett Chudej, the âKats opened the Class
1A Div. II playoffs with a convincing 72-36 shellacking of Hermleigh at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum Tuesday night.
Chudej scored 19 points and Long added 16, while Corbin Davis and Hayden
Halfmann chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively, to pace Garden City, which improved to 14-7 for the season with the victory.
LEVELLAND â The Big Spring softball team cruised to am 8-2 win against Levelland Tuesday night, upping its records to 2-2.
The Lady Steers rode the arm of Logan Yarbar, who was credited with the win.
Angelina Castillo was big, going 2 for 4. She batted in three runs in the sixth inning, ensuring the Lady Steers left Levelland with a win.
Outside of Castillo, Haley Dimidjian, Mackenzie Stone and Jiliian Valle all went 2 for 4.

What does a head coach whoâs never been to the playoffs tell his players about the playoffs?
Itâs something the eight seniors on this team can relate to.
âIâve talked to a lot of coaches who have been in my position and I just try to heed their advice and make it fun for the guys,â BSHS boysâ basketball head coach Cliff Thompson said. âFor a lot of them, I just make sure theyâre enjoying it because itâs the last time theyâll get to do this. For me, itâs a learning process, for them itâs the only chance they get.â
