Idle Lady Steers clinch playoff spot

April 20, 2011

After an up-and-down season, perhaps it was appropriate that the Big Spring Lady Steers earned a spot in the state softball playoffs by doing … nothing.

The Lady Steers, who were idle Tuesday, earned the third and final postseason berth from District 5-3A by virtue of Brownwood's 19-7 win over Abilene Wylie. If Wylie had defeated Brownwood, it would have ended the season tied with Big Spring and forced an extra game with the Lady Steers to determine the district's final playoff representative.

Errors prove costly for Lady Steers in loss

April 12, 2011

The Big Spring Lady Steers continue to be their own worst enemy.

Seven Big Spring errors opened the floodgates for Brownwood and helped the Lady Lions waltz to a 10-0 run-rule victory over the Lady Steers in District 5-3A softball action at the Big Spring ISD Softball Complex Monday.

It wasn't as if Brownwood needed any help, either — the district champion Lady Lions suffocated Big Spring with strong pitching from Sydney Laws, who improved to 12-3 for the season, and sterling defense to improve to a perfect 6-0 in district games.
