SWEETWATER — The Big Spring Lady Steers rode the hitting of Jillian Valle and the pitching of Valerie Ross to a 5-1 victory over Sweetwater in District 5-3A softball action Tuesday night.
The Lady Steers plated four runs in the top of the first inning and Ross and the BSHS defense made the lead stand up. Ross went the distance for Big Spring, scattering eight hits while striking out six and walking three. Taylor McCoy took the loss for Sweetwater.
COAHOMA — The race for the third baseball playoff spot from District 3-2A can't get much tighter.
The Forsan Buffaloes moved into a tie with Coahoma for third place in the district baseball race by knocking off the Bulldogs, 8-3, here Tuesday night.
The Buffaloes were led by the pitching duo of Dylan Lowery and Peyton Parker, who combined to scatter eight Coahoma hits. Lowery took the win, while Parker pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the save.
Coahoma starter Kaleb McAdams was tagged with the loss.
COAHOMA — The Forsan Lady Buffaloes have a specific script for success they must follow this softball season.
Unlike the past two state championship teams, this year's squad is not packed with star power and therefore has a smaller margin of error. To succeed, their coach said, the Lady Buffs have to combine good defense with timely hitting and throw in a pinch of pitching if they are going to have any chance of duplicating their past success.
So far, so good.
Kaci Smith has finally found her rhythm and for the second week in a row brought home the first place prize in barrel racing this past weekend at the Western Texas College rodeo in Snyder.
Smith scorched times of 13.64 in the long round and a 13.80 in the short, which was enough for the first place finish in the average.
“Kaci is doing a great job,” said Greg Kernick, Howard College rodeo coach. “She just needs to keep going fast and we’ll see her at he national finals.”
