LUBBOCK — It doesn’t pay to doubt Mike Menefield.

The Big Spring High School track star earned a return trip to the Texas high school track meet in dramatic and convincing fashion, setting the triple jump record at the Region I-3A Track Meet in Lubbock Monday.

Menefield scratched on his first two attempts Monday, but on his third and final try, he uncorked a leap of 49 feet, 6.5 inches to both win the event and set the meet record at the same time.

His winning jump was more than three feet better than that posted by runner-up Dillon Wilkins of Mineral Wells.
