November 10th

Coahoma enters playoffs

November 10, 2011

After last week's 40-6 loss at the hands of district champion Idalou, the Coahoma Bulldogs are ready to get back on the field. The Dogs will travel to Plainview Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. clash with Spearman.
The 8-2 Spearman Lynx finished the regular season in third place in their district behind Sanford-Fritch and Abernathy.

Lady Steers down Graham, advance to Semi's

Planning to play the Big Spring Steers? Planning to play four games? Good luck. So far this post season, Big Spring has not had a match go past three games. They have swept all their opponents decisively and last night was no exception. The Lady Steers took down the District 6-3A champion Graham Lady Blues 25-19, 25-14 and 25-14 in the Regional Quarterfinals.

Steers cross country competes at Regional Meet

The Steers cross country team represented Big Spring this week at the Regional Meet,with the boys finishing in ninth place overall and the girls crossing the line at 13th place.

Gustavo Lugo led the way for the boys, claiming the fifth spot overall with a time of 16:20.20. Right behind Lugo, in sixth place, was Thomas King. The Big Spring sophomore posted a time of 16:33.70.

Mike Williams finished in 31st place, Nathan Jimenez came in 84th, Mason Ford crossed the line in 94th and Joshua Means ranked in at the 130th spot.

Steers season to end Friday night

As winter approaches and the nights begin to get longer, the sun is quickly setting on another year of Steers' football, with the 0-9 Steers heading into Friday night's season finale in Snyder.

The 2011 season has been a disappointing one for Steer Nation, though fans saw their hometown boys come close in several games. The heart-breaking 7-6 season-opening loss to Fort Stockton seemed to set the tone for the season, as it would be the closest Big Spring would come to a win.

District 2-2A offers plenty of excitement Friday

Welcome to the final week of the regular season. Get ready for a bumpy, hard-hitting ride. District 2-2A has all the excitement football fans could want this week, as three area teams jockey for position.

The 6-3 Coahoma Bulldogs have already clinched a playoff spot as they sit side-by-side with Idalou at 5-0 in district play. They will be playing for the district title Friday night in Idalou. Bulldogs' head coach Trey Gardner said it was a win-win situation for his team.

November 2nd

Garden City cross country heads to Arlington

The Garden City varsity girls cross country team took first place at the District 10-1A meet in Lamesa recently. Kamie Halfmann took first place overall, with Vanessa Cardenas and Magdaly Huerta close behind in sixth and seventh place, respectively.

Hannah Halfmann finbished in 12th place, Brylie Schaefer in 14th and Holly Halfmann in 25th. The Lady Kats will compete at the Regional II 1A meet Saturday Nov. 5 at Vandergriff Park in Arlington. Start time is 12:05 p.m. They are coached by Amy Hoch-Niehues.

Lady Steers advance to Area round

EASTLAND — In the swiftest of fashions, the Big Spring Lady Steers grabbed the Bi-District championship from the Vernon Lady Lions Tuesday night in Eastland. The girls needed only three games to claim the title and advance to a meeting with Kennedale in the Area round of the playoffs.

Forsan falls to Stanton

FORSAN — In a surprising display of defensive fortitude, The Stanton Buffaloes have caught up with the Forsan Buffaloes in the playoff race after defeating their district rivals 23-13 Friday night.

Unfortunately for both squads the tie is for fourth place in the district. Stanton and Forsan both stand at 2-3 in district play behind Hawley (3-2). Of course, Idalou and Coahoma are sitting pretty on top of the district, both without a district loss, but that will change Friday night when the two teams meet for the district championship.

October 28th

Forsan wins district cross country title

The Forsan boys cross country team finished in first place in the district meet in Lubbock. This is the fourth consecutive district title for the Buffaloes and makes five out of the last six.

The boys had a perfect score, claiming the first five spots individually. Kyle Stevenson finished in first place overall with a time of 17:08, followed closely by second place finisher P.J. Horton with a time of 17:28.

Third place went to Tyler Evans with 17:35, while Matthew Mims took fourth place and Elgen Suazo took fifth place.

October 27th

Lady Steers to face Vernon in playoffs

The Lady Steers clinched a playoff spot this week, defeating Brownwood in four games. Big Spring grabs the runner-up position for District 5-3A and will face the Vernon Lady Lions, District 6-3A's third place finisher either Oct. 31 or Nov. 1 in the Bi-District round of the playoffs.

The Lady Steers fell behind in the first game, eventually falling by a close 23-25 score. The games did not get any easier, but the girls of Big Spring forced things to go their way, winning three straight games by scores of 26-24, 25-23 and 27-25.
