Area Hoops Roundup

November 28, 2012

Big Spring
SEMINOLE — The Lady Steers (3-3) fell short on the road Tuesday against the Seminole Lady Indians, losing 30-24 despite a strong defensive showing.

BSHS Head Coach Mike Warren is focused on executing offensively before district play begins.

“We played really well on defense,” Warren said. “We could not get going offensively. (Seinole) ran zone on us and we couldn't hit our outside shots.”

Much of the reason for the Lady Steers' opponents using a zone defense attack is due to the scoring threat of Yaneira Tuitt.

November 21, 2012

The 2012 Lady Steers volleyball team had a successful year.

BSHS wrapped up the season with a 26-14 overall record, went 7-3 in a competitive district and made it to the regional semifinal round of the playoffs before losing a five-set match against Lubbock Cooper.

Several Lady Steers were recognized this week with District 4-3A honors.

Senior Carson Reibe was named Defensive Specialist of the Year.

Erin Pollard claimed the Newcomer of the Year award.

Seniors Clara Benavides and Haley Dimidjian and junior Morgan Seaton all received First Team All-District nods.

November 21, 2012

Both Big Spring varsity basketball squads won last night at home.

The Lady Steers defeated Andrews 49-31 to improve to 3-2.

Yaneira Tuitt led BSHS with 18 points and five rebounds. Dyrshae Vanderbilt and sophomore Julianna Rodriguez each accounted for eight points as the the Lady Steers got back on the right side of the win column after back-to-back losses against Odessa High and Lamesa.

“It was a good non-district game,” Head Coach Mike Warren said. “It was good to get a win after losing the last two games.”

Containing Tuitt has been a priority for opposing teams.

Forsan falls to Quanah 41-6

November 17, 2012

CLYDE — Brendan Roman, senior running back for Forsan picked up a Quanah fumble at the one-yard line and ran it in for a 99-yard touchdown early in the first quarter during the Buffaloes (6-5) bi-district outing against the 8-3 Indians on Friday.

Unfortunately for the Buffs, a holding penalty caused the score to be recalled.

That would set the tone of Forsan's season-ending, 41-6 loss. Five interceptions and a lost fumble coupled with costly penalties proved insurmountable for Head Coach Jason Phillips' squad.

Grady avenges loss to Ropes in playoff opener

November 17, 2012

ACKERLY — Grady (8-3) opened its season with back-to-back losses, including a narrow, 56-48 defeat at the hands of the Ropes Eagles (7-4) in the Wildcats first game of the year.

After winning six of its last seven regular season games, Grady — under the tutelage of first year Head Coach Chris Kuykendal — met Ropes once again Friday in the first round of postseason action.

This time, a much-improved Wildcat squad upended the Eagles in a convincing, 80-56 win.

Grady trailed 16-0 early in the affair, but rallied back to take a 44-22 heading into the second half.

STERLING CITY — The Garden City Bearkats posted a 3-7 record during the regular season, but found a way into the playoffs.

Despite being at their healthiest in some time, the Bearkats — who won back-to-back state championships in 2009 and 2010 — were outmatched by the undefeated Water Valley Wildcats on Thursday, losing their postseason opener by mercy rule, 64-18.

Forsan advances to playoffs with win over Winters

November 10, 2012

FORSAN — It was a must-win scenario for the Buffaloes. A victory over the Winters Blizzards, and Forsan Head Coach Jason Phillips' squad makes a playoff appearance. A loss and they are done for the season.
Prior to Friday's bout, Phillips toldsaid he wanted to restore the running game and put more points on the board than he his squad has in the previous weeks.

Phillips adjustments worked, as the Buffaloes shutout the Blizzards 24-0, relying mostly on the ground game to advance to bi-district where they will face the 7-3 Quanah Indians.

Coahoma loses to Alpine, 53-25

November 10, 2012

COAHOMA — With the injuries Coahoma has faced to its position players, it seemed a bit like a David vs. Goliath affair as the Bulldogs hosted the perennially robust Alpine Bucks on Friday to close out their season.

This time, Goliath won.

Despite a characteristic strong showing from the 'Dogs, Alpine went home the victors with a 53-25 win, cementing its District 3-2A title.

As for Coahoma, Head Coach Trey Gardner hopes the grit shown by his seniors set a good example for the underclassmen poised to fill their shoes.

Steers stumble in second half, fall to Monahans

November 10, 2012

MONAHANS — It was the Steers' last chance to make their mark in district play against a formidable Monahans squad — whose only district loss came to No. 2 ranked Wylie — on the road Friday, but a lack of offensive execution in the second half put the Loboes on top, 36-13.

Though it wasn't the way BSHS Head Coach Phillip Ritchey wanted the season to end, he remains optimistic Big Spring's future is bright.
