LUBBOCK – Hard work apparently pays off.
The Howard College Hawks spent much of the week leading up to the Region V junior college basketball tournament fine-tuning their defense and the results of all that preparation were on display Thursday at Lubbock Christian University's Rip Griffin Center.
The Hawks delivered a stunning defensive performance in the first half of their tournament opener and that was more than enough to secure them an 85-57 victory over Weatherford College.
The weather was cold, but the Big Spring Steers' bats were hot.
The Steers proved to be ungracious hosts Thursday night, downing Monahans, 15-5, to cap first day play at the Big Spring Varsity Baseball Tournament.
The Steers spotted Monahans a 2-0 lead after the top of the second, but stormed back with seven runs in their half of the inning and never looked back from there.
BSHS Head Coach Burt Otto said his team did a good job shaking off temperatures that hovered around freezing Thursday night.
