Howard College baseball is no stranger to national rankings, and this year will be no different if all goes as planned. The “Perfect Game” preseason poll announced Wednesday has the Hawks perched in the No. 1 slot for the 2012 season.
“We are at a point in our program right now where we feel that we should be competing for a shot at the national title every year,” said Britt Smith, head coach and HC athletic director.

Quick basketball lesson: If you keep the other team from scoring, your chances for victory become ridiculously easy.
The Big Spring Lady Steers took that lesson to heart Tuesday, using ferocious defensive pressure to hound the Monahans Lady Loboes into submission en route to a 67-24 non-district basketball victory at Steer Gym Tuesday night.
Big Spring served notice from the start what kind of night it would been when the Lady Steers blanked Monahans in the first quarter — and it barely got better for the Lady Loboes from there.

MIDLAND — Some things should just be assumed when Howard College and Midland College meet on the basketball court — defense will rule the day; the winner will be celebrating a hard-fought win; and the loser will be left regretting missed chances.
Monday night's doubleheader at Chaparral Center followed that script perfectly as Midland took a pair of defensive battles against the Hawks, prevailing 59-53 in the women's game and 66-60 in the men's contest.
