Steers fall short of upset, lose to defending champ Stephenville

November 30, 2013

ABILENE — In what was probably the most exciting game in the state over the weekend, Big Spring came up just short of a major upset over defending state champion Stephenville Friday at Wylie's Bulldog Stadium.

The Steers (9-4) had a two-point lead over the Yellow Jackets (12-1) with 35 seconds to go in the regional playoff game, thanks to a touchdown by junior quarterback Tobyn Tannehill.

Steers rout Andrews for area championship

November 23, 2013

ODESSA — Within the storied confines of Ratliff Stadium, Big Spring (9-3) engaged in its second shootout with Andrews (5-7) this season, but this time, it was the Steers who did most of the shooting.

Despite the less than desirable field conditions and freezing weather, BSHS routed the rival Mustangs 56-7, bringing its two-game postseason point total to 117 — and counting.

Junior running back Hunter Hill scored four times, bringing his touchdown total to nine against AHS in two outings.

Lady Steers fall to Decatur in state semifinal

November 23, 2013

GARLAND — Big Spring’s hopes of a state title were rudely ended Friday at the Curtis Cullwell Center as the Lady Steer’s historic season came to a close in the state semifinal round.

Big Spring ran into a team with too many weapons and the result was a  25-12, 25-22, 25-10 loss to the Decatur Eagles.

It’s the first trip to the state tournament for the 40-7 Eagles and they made the most of their initial semifinal appearance.

The planned route will begin on the west side of the high school, then south on Goliad to 24th, then west on 24th to Gregg, then to I-20.

Lady Steers defeat Wylie to advance to state championship

November 18, 2013

SNYDER — Big Spring is headed to the state championship tournament.

The Lady Steers (31-13) may as well have been playing a home game Saturday against District 4-3A nemesis Abilene Wylie, as the crowd was very Big Spring-centric. And quite loud.

Steers win bi-district championship with rout of Fabens

November 16, 2013

PECOS — In a display of sheer domination, Big Spring (8-3) defeated Fabens (4-7) 61-21 at Eagle Stadium Friday, earning the bi-district championship for the first time since 2009.

There were no pivotal moments which served as turning points in momentum — the Steers simply dominated in all phases of the game from the opening kickoff, amassing more than 650 yards of total offense while keeping the Wildcats stymied with smothering defense.

Forsan falls out of playoffs with 20-14 loss to Windthorst

November 16, 2013

COLORADO CITY — It was a hard-fought game, but Forsan (4-7) lost to Windthorst (5-5) 20-14 Friday, ending the Buffaloes' up-and-down season in the bi-district round of the postseason.

The Buffs played well for much of the game, outgaining Windthorst by more than 100 total yards and led 14-7 at the start of the fourth quarter.

It wasn't a lack of offensive or defensive skill which slowed Forsan down, but errors coming at inopportune times, according to FHS Head Coach Jason Phillips.

Lady Steers rally past Springtown, advance to regional final to meet Wylie

November 16, 2013

SNYDER — The Lady Steers (30-13) rallied Friday at the Coliseum after falling in the first two sets to top Springtown (32-8) 22-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-16, 15-13, claiming the regional semifinal championship in the process.

The win also set up a chance at redemption against District 4-3A rival Wylie (32-9), which is ranked No. 4 in the state by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. A win would crown Big Spring the regional champions and set up a state title run.

Crossroads teams brace for playoffs

November 13, 2013

The Crossroads area football playoff pairings have been finalized.

Big Spring (7-3) will be facing Fabens (4-6) in Pecos on Friday at 7:30 p.m. If the Steers can rebound from Friday's 31-0 loss against Monahans and knock Fabens out of contention, they could again face Andrews (4-6) — which they defeated 61-38 in predistrict play — in the area round, should the Mustangs come out ahead of Borger (3-7).

The road will get a bit harder for BSHS if it can make it to the regional quarterfinal round. At that point, the Steers would likely face Stephenville (8-1) — the defending 3A champion.
