Four local Little League All-Star squads win

June 27, 2013

ODESSA — The 10-year-old Big Spring Little League All-Stars trailed Jim Parker 3-1 after the first inning of play, but turned the tide in the second inning, scoring four runs to take a 5-3 lead over the host team.
Big Spring went on to add 10 more runs in the outing, winning by a score of 15-5.
Jim Parker's offense floundered, while Big Spring's bats were relentless.
Manager of the Big Spring 10-year-old squad Isaac Miramontes cited aggressive hitting and effective base running as the keys to the victory, as well as a strong perfromance by pitcher Brandon Valdez.

Big Spring fills vacant coaching positions

When Big Spring Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Phillip Ritchey began his search for a new baseball coach and basketball coach at the varsity level, he didn't anticipate both of them being plucked from 2A Skidmore-Tynan, located near Corpus Christi.

Bobby Smith, a successful baseball manager Ritchey has worked with in the past, and Adam Woolam, who brings 14 years of head basketball coaching experience with him, have been tapped to fill the vacancies left by former coaches Bert Otto and Cliff Thompson.

Local youth to compete at world's largest junior rodeo

Big Spring’s Canyon Atkinson, a seventh grade student and son of Shannon and Belinda Crenshaw, has been riding bulls since he was seven years old. Atkinson recently qualified for the world’s largest junior rodeo, where he will compete against the best in the world.

The National Junior High Finals Rodeo will take place in Gallup, N.M., beginning June 23. Atkinson will join about 2,000 other young buckaroos at the yearly event, which features participants from 41 U.S. States, five Canadian provinces and Australia.

Dave Campbell's Texas Football — a fun read, but not gospel

Few things get me as pumped up about the upcoming football season as the day I receive my copy of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football in the mail.

Not that Campbell’s publication is the be all, end all of what will transpire during the season. Its predictions are often wrong, but it’s definitely a fun read if you are a fan of high school football and it contains a cavalcade of information on every team in the state.

Howard College's baseball program has a history of sending players off to the next level. Whether that level is a Division I school, a minor league squad or a major league organization, HC Manager Britt Smith can be counted on to root for their success.

This season, several Hawks, former Hawks and future Hawks have been eyed by the big league scouts. Topping the list of hopefuls is the 6'9'' David Palladino, a righty from Emerson, N.J. Palladino went in the fifth round and was taken as the 164th overall pick by the New York Yankees.
