Forsan falls out of playoffs with 20-14 loss to Windthorst

November 16, 2013

COLORADO CITY — It was a hard-fought game, but Forsan (4-7) lost to Windthorst (5-5) 20-14 Friday, ending the Buffaloes' up-and-down season in the bi-district round of the postseason.

The Buffs played well for much of the game, outgaining Windthorst by more than 100 total yards and led 14-7 at the start of the fourth quarter.

It wasn't a lack of offensive or defensive skill which slowed Forsan down, but errors coming at inopportune times, according to FHS Head Coach Jason Phillips.

Lady Steers rally past Springtown, advance to regional final to meet Wylie

November 16, 2013

SNYDER — The Lady Steers (30-13) rallied Friday at the Coliseum after falling in the first two sets to top Springtown (32-8) 22-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-16, 15-13, claiming the regional semifinal championship in the process.

The win also set up a chance at redemption against District 4-3A rival Wylie (32-9), which is ranked No. 4 in the state by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. A win would crown Big Spring the regional champions and set up a state title run.

Crossroads teams brace for playoffs

November 13, 2013

The Crossroads area football playoff pairings have been finalized.

Big Spring (7-3) will be facing Fabens (4-6) in Pecos on Friday at 7:30 p.m. If the Steers can rebound from Friday's 31-0 loss against Monahans and knock Fabens out of contention, they could again face Andrews (4-6) — which they defeated 61-38 in predistrict play — in the area round, should the Mustangs come out ahead of Borger (3-7).

The road will get a bit harder for BSHS if it can make it to the regional quarterfinal round. At that point, the Steers would likely face Stephenville (8-1) — the defending 3A champion.

Steers close out season with loss to Monahans, move on to face Fabens in bi-district

November 13, 2013

For the first time in 23 years, Big Spring had a chance to claim at least a share of the district championship Friday at Memorial Stadium.
It wasn't the Steers' night.

District foe Monahans ended up winning the title with a 31-0 rout of Big Spring.

Hardly the end to an otherwise stellar season the Steers and Head Coach Phillip Ritchey had hoped for.

But this time around, instead of being forced to wait an entire year to for a shot redemption, BSHS only has to wait a few days, as it will be in the playoffs taking on Fabens — the first postseason appearance since 2009.

Lady Steers edge Monahans to advance to Region I-3A tourney

November 13, 2013

MIDLAND — Not only are the Lady Steers headed to the regional volleyball tournament, they overcame a huge obstacle by the name of Monahans to get there.

Big Spring (29-13) started off strong. Unwilling to let rival Monahans defeat them for the third time this season, the Lady Steers took the first set 25-20 and turned in an even stronger performance in the second set, winning 25-15.

Steers come out ahead of Sweetwater in 65-42 shootout

October 26, 2013

SWEETWATER — Out to prove they're no fluke, the Steers (6-2) traveled to Mustang Bowl Friday to take on Sweetwater (3-5) — as well as earn their second consecutive district victory.

They did just that. Big Spring defeated the Mustangs 65-42, asserting its dominance in a district it couldn't find a way to win in for the past two seasons. But good things come to those who wait. And BSHS Head Coach Phillip Ritchey is glad the wait is over. Not only are the Steers a shoe-in for the playoffs, they could win or split the 4-3A title.

Long time coming — Steers earn 42-14 win over Snyder

October 19, 2013

The drought is over. The Steer faithful — as well as Head Coach Phillip Ritchey — finally celebrated a district win after two straight seasons without one, as Big Spring (5-2, 1-1) defeated Snyder 42-14 at Memorial Stadium.

“I feel a ton lighter,” Ritchey said of the win. “It's a big load off our backs. It was a humongous win for us. It was one of the best games we've played in a long time. From start to finish. We picked up momentum at the Wylie game and brought it over to the this one. Hopefully it will keep snowballing.”

Former Steers honored at Sun Bowl

October 9, 2013

EL PASO — Three former Big Spring football players were among those honored recently at the 50-year anniversary of the Sun Bowl — the University of Texas at El Paso's venue and also where Jack Ed Irons, Jerry Tucker and Dexter Pate played collegiate football. Except five decades ago, it was known as Texas Western University.

While at Big Spring, the trio were all captains of the football squad. They played baseball together and led what Irons descibed as a very close-knit Steer team back in 1961.
