Hawks drop from tourney with loss to Grayson

May 15, 2013

GRAND PRAIRIE — Howard College's first order of business at the NJCAA Region V Tournament at QuikTrip Field was to find a way to win against No. 10 ranked Grayson College. The Hawks did just that, as they defeated the Vikings handily, 10-5.

After a 2-1 win over New Mexico Junior College and a 7-6 loss to Midland College, Howard was forced to face the Vikings, yet again.

This time, the Hawks found themselves on the receiving end of a 4-1 ballgame Tuesday — as well as eliminated from the postseason despite a solid effort by starting pitcher Diego Rodriguez and relief pitcher Blake Smith.

Hawks drop heartbreaker to Midland, still alive at tourney

GRAND PRAIRIE — Again, Midland College is a thorn in Howard College's side.

The Hawks (37-22) were cruising at the NJCAA Region V Tournament, having defeated tough opponents in No. 10 Grayson College, then New Mexico Junior College in the first two rounds of play.

But an unearned run scored by the Chaparrals in the bottom of the ninth inning Monday led to a narrow 7-6 victory, sending the Hawks to the loser's bracket.

Baseball

Forsan
CLYDE — Forsan have been playing lights-out baseball for the previous few weeks. Most recently, the Buffaloes eliminated rival Borden County from postseason play after a 6-5, extra-inning affair that lasted nearly four hours.

Forsan jumped on Borden early, racking up runs in the first two innings to take a 5-0 lead.

Undaunted, the Coyotes returned the favor in the sixth, scoring four to pull within a run. BC tied it up in the top of the seventh to send the game into overtime.

Hawks take out Grayson and NMJC to advance at Region V tourney

GRAND PRAIRIE — If you had told Howard College Head Baseball Coach Britt Smith a month ago that his team would be one game away from the Region V championship, he may not have believed you.

All season long, Smith has been critical of his squad's overall effort.
“They are a selfish team,” Smith proclaimed a few weeks ago.
Since then, Smith has changed his tune a bit. And for good reason — the Hawks went up against nationally-ranked Grayson College in the tournament opener and came away with a 10-5 win.

Hawks to make debut at Region V tourney

May 7, 2013

ODESSA — The Hawks fought through a season of adversity, but now they can breathe for a moment — Howard College baseball will be represented at the Region V Tournament in Grand Prairie. But first, they had to get past Western Junior College Athletic Conference rival Odessa College.

It was the epitome of a must-win game Saturday as the Hawks' postseason fate would be determined by the outcome of the final meeting of a four-game series — as well as the regular season — between the Hawks and the Wranglers.

Big Spring
MIDLAND — After pounding Fort Stockton 14-5 in the bi-district round, Big Spring found themselves on the ropes Saturday in Game Two of a three-game affair against Andrews.

Having lost Game One by a score of 10-5, The Lady Steers’ had to win in order to force a Game Three, but errors — 14 in two games to be precise — led to too many Lady Mustang runs, while Big Spring’s offense was helpless through seven innings.

Steers dispatch Pecos, Buffaloes beat Van Horn as both teams adavance to area round

May 6, 2013

Big Spring
ANDREWS — For the second straight year, Big Spring has advanced to the area round of the playoff after winning a best-of-three series against Pecos in Game Two on Saturday, 5-4.

The Steers and the Mustangs were in a dogfight until the bottom of the seventh. Then, Big Spring's grit came through yet again.

Gunnar Kennedy — who pitched a complete-game for the Steers — led off with a double to kickstart a BSHS last-inning rally.

Clean-up batter Max Pappajohn was walked intentionally, but was erased on a Fielder's Choice when Joseph Morelion made contact.

All five Steer golfers managed to shoot in the 80s despite facing yet another day of bad weather on the links.

Forsan takes Game One from Eldorado, 10-3

May 3, 2013

SAN ANGELO — Just as its first playoff opponent, Clyde-Eula did, No. 9 ranked Eldorado jumped out to an early lead over Forsan on Thursday at Lake View High School.

The Lady Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the first after a pair of base hits and a couple of errors were committed by the Lady Buffaloes.

"I don't know why we start out that way," FHS Head Coach Shanna Taylor said with a laugh. "It could a be jitters we have to get past. But the girls never seem to get in panic mode."

Part of the reason the Lady Buffs keep their cool comes from high-intensity practices.
