Steer golfers in second place at regional tourney

April 18, 2013

LUBBOCK — Thirty degrees with 30 miles an hour wind gusts. That's what the Big Spring boys golf team is facing today as they wrap up the regional tournament at Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock.

The Steers shot a good round yesterday and at press time, are sitting in second place with a score of 309 — one stroke ahead of rival Abilene Wylie and 12 strokes behind No. 1 Andrews.

“I'm proud of our kids,” Joslin said of Wednesday's performance. “It was really tough, the wind was blowing hard. We wanted to put ourselves in position to get a top three finish finish and we did that.”

GREENWOOD — Big Spring baseball was also on the receiving end of a loss on the road Tuesday, as the Rangers held on for a 5-2 win over the Steers, throwing a monkey wrench in Head Coach Bert Otto's plan to nab the No. 2 seed out of District 4-3A, which is more desirable than a No. 3 spot due to the strength of potential opponents.

In the top of the first inning, Karsten Knudson and Haegan Rodriguez led off the game with back-to-back singles, then Knudson scored a run on a sacrifice fly by Gunnar Kennedy to put the Steers up 1-0.

Seeley's grand slam helps key Hawks' win

April 17, 2013

More often than not, when you give up 10 runs in a baseball game it's bad news, but that wasn't the case for Howard College on Tuesday. The Hawks were smacking the ball around and won 16-10, with sophomore Reed Seeley belting a grand slam to help key the win.

Howard also got a little — OK, a lot — of help from mistakes on the part of the Westerners, who recorded six errors in the high-scoring affair.

Hawks take out Hutchinson 92-69

March 20, 2013

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Howard College men’s basketball team had never seen a crowd like they did Tuesday at the National Junior College Athletic Association championship tournament as they were tasked with facing the hometown team — Hutchinson Community College (31-2) — which was in the national tourney for the first time since 1997.

But, the Hawks have some big time players who made some big time baskets down the stretch to take a commanding lead they wouldn’t relinquish and removed the Blue Dragons from the bracket with a 92-69 win.

It was a tight game for 30 minutes.

Steers, Buffaloes win district baseball openers

March 20, 2013

Big Spring
SNYDER — Big Spring Head Baseball Coach Bert Otto’s team is off to another good start.

Using a little small ball, patience and luck, the Steers won their district opener on the road against Snyder by a score of 2-0.

Both teams’ bats were quiet to start off, when in the top of the fourth inning, Haegan Rodriguez led off with a stand-up triple.

Gunnar Kennedy then hit a ball hard to the Tigers’ short stop who committed a throwing error, allowing Rodriguez to cross home plate and Kennedy to advance to second base.
