Defense keys Steers’ rout

After hearing how poorly the defense had played for weeks, linebacker Garrett Wigington was in no mood to mince words on Friday night following the Big Spring Steers’ 41-14 mauling of the Hereford Whitefaces in front of a large crowd at Memorial Stadium.

The Big Spring Junior High School Steers made sure the 2014 football season got off to a solid start on Thursday afternoon in front of a large crowd at Memorial Stadium.

Central topples Lady Steers

On paper, the San Angelo Central Lady ‘Cats look as if they administered a good old-fashioned beat down with their 3-0 win over the Big Spring High School Lady Steers.
Then again, stats on paper doesn’t tell the whole story.
Facing a veteran Class 6A squad with a large front line, the Lady Steers turned in a gutsy effort in their final non-district home appearance. Big Spring actually controlled the game during several stretches, including the final half of the decisive Game 3.

MONAHANS – The Big Spring High School defense had every chance in the world to fold up like a cheap suit on Friday night in front of a large crowd at Estes Memorial Stadium.
Sure. At times, they were pushed around more than a lawnmower in Florida as they gave up 364 yards.
Sure. They got a little help from the officiating crew that overturned a fourth-quarter touchdown that would have given the Loboes a lead with just over 2 minutes to play.

Collins become first Hawk to homer in Majors

Tyler Collins continues to make Howard College baseball history ... even three seasons after he earned the National Junior College Player of the Year honors and headed off to professional baseball.
Collins became the first Howard College product to homer in the Major Leagues on Monday afternoon by launching a three-run pinch-hit blast in the Detroit Tigers’ 12-1 rout of the Cleveland.

Big Spring rallies for 58-56 victory over Kerrvile Tivy

SAN ANGELO – The Big Spring High School Steers made sure the large crowd on hand at San Angelo Stadium got their money’s worth on Saturday evening.
And then some.
Matt Yanez, on the final play of the Steers’ season opener, outleaped a crowd of defenders in the end and snagged a 41-yard “Hail Mary” pass from Tobyn Tannehill and then alertly pitched the ball to teammate Hunter Hill, who finished off a wild come-from-behind victory over Kerrville Tivy by cradling the game-winning touchdown while falling to the ground.

Lady Rattlers look to learn from opener

Coach Derrick Jackson looked out at the court at the SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf Activity Center following the Lady Rattlers’ season-opening loss to the No. 19-ranked Western Texas College Lady Wranglers and breathed a sigh of relief.
Tuesday’s 25-7, 25-4, 25-6 loss to Western Texas wasn’t a story-book beginning for his team, but it was a beginning nonetheless.

SWCID set to kick off volleyball program

August 25, 2014

The SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf Lady Rattlers will write a new page in Howard County athletic history tomorrow night. They will bring collegiate volleyball action to the Crossroads. The Lady Rattlers will take to the SWCID Activity Center at 6 p.m. for their first-ever game.
