AUSTIN - Jeremy Cervantes wrote his name deep into Forsan High School athletic history on Saturday in front of a large crowd at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
While Dyrshae Vanderbilt and Ryan Lopez attempt to lead their Big Spring High School relay teams to wins ion Saturday, they wonâ€™t be the only Crossroads area athletes looking to claim medals when the 2014 University Interscholastic Leagueâ€™s state track and field meet gets under way on Friday. In addition to Big Spring, no fewer than 21 other area athletes will be competing in the Class A meets.
BSISD officials have scheduled a meeting for 10:30 a.m. on Monday in the west parking lot of Memorial Stadium to showcase a large-scale model of a proposed new scoreboard the district is considering.
The Forsan High School Buffaloes will be playing Tahoka in the area round of the Class A baseball playoffs ton Friday. The two will be playing a best-of-three series in Seminole. Fridayâ€™s game will begin at 6 p.m. Game 2 will start at 1 on Saturday. A third game, if necessary will begin 30 minutes after Game 2.
Many of the teams and athletes gathering this weekend at the University Interscholastic Leagueâ€™s Class 3A State Track and Field Championships in Austin know they donâ€™t have a chance at winning a state title. That isnâ€™t the case for the Big Spring High School Lady Steers 4x200- and 4x400-meter relay teams.
Both have very realistic chances of walking away from the meet with gold medals.
The Howard College Lady Hawks may have seen their bid to earn a berth in the NJCAA softball World Series fall one game shy, but that didnâ€™t mean the team didnâ€™t impress on the field.
Proof the Lady Hawks were among the top squads on the field came earlier this week when six members of the Howard College squad were named to the Western Junior College Athletic Conferenceâ€™s 2014 all-conference roster. The six were among 21 WJCAC softball standouts honored with postseason awards.
The Big Spring ISD Softball Complex will serve as the host site for the Class 2A regional quarterfinal playoff game between the Colorado Lady Wolves and Abernathy on Thursday, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
When it comes to the high school softball playoffs, the Coahoma Bulldogettes and Forsan Lady Buffaloes are familiar names. Both have won state championships and made extended runs in the postseason in recent years. Both will be looking to add an extra page to their history books this weekend when they kick off play in the regional quarterfinal round.
The Howard College Hawks, fresh off a four-game sweep of the Odessa College Wranglers, will kick off their bid to earn a spot in the 2014 NJCAA World Series this weekend when they join eight teams in the Region V Baseball Tournament. The tournament will be played May 9-14 at the Texas Tech baseball complex.
Big Spring High School athletic parents and fans will get a chance to see their favorite athletes honored on May 16 when the school holds its annual All-Sports Banquet on May 16. The banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the BSHS cafeteria.
