The Howard College Hawks, fresh off a four-game sweep of the Odessa College Wranglers, will kick off their bid to earn a spot in the 2014 NJCAA World Series this weekend when they join eight teams in the Region V Baseball Tournament. The tournament will be played May 9-14 at the Texas Tech baseball complex.
Big Spring High School athletic parents and fans will get a chance to see their favorite athletes honored on May 16 when the school holds its annual All-Sports Banquet on May 16. The banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the BSHS cafeteria.
Odessa College broke open a 1-1 deadlock by pounding out eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and raced to a heart-rending 9-1 victory in the Region V West Softball Championship game in front of a large crowd at the Texas Tech softball complex.
SAN ANGELO â€“ The Fort Stockton High School Panthers completed what may down as the biggest upset since David knocked out Goliath on Saturday afternoon at the San Angelo Central field. Maybe it was even bigger than that.
PECOS â€“ Jordan Matthews made sure the Forsan High School Lady Buffaloes would have no trouble getting to the third round of the Class A state softball playoffs on Saturday.
SAN ANGELO â€“ The Big Spring High School Steers didnâ€™t have any problem putting runners on base on Thursday afternoon at San Angelo Centralâ€™s Bobcat Stadium in the opening game of their best-of-three bi-district playoff series with the Fort Stockton High School Panthers. They had 12 runners reach base in the game.
While getting on base may not have been a problem, getting those baserunners home was.
Howard College Lady Hawksâ€™ head coach Kelly Raines is happy her team posted a 43-11 record during the 2014 regular season. Sheâ€™s even happier they went 24-4 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference play and finished second in the overall conference race. Neither of those two things are important now. The only thing, she said, that matters is playing well at tournament time.
High school softball will take center stage in the Crossroads region this afternoon as both Forsan and Coahoma will be playing in area round playoff matchups.
