ST. GEORGE, Utah — After losing to Salt Lake Community College in Game 2 of the national softball championship tournament, Howard College was tasked with the difficult chore of winning up to seven consecutive games against the stiffest competition in the nation in order to avoid elimination and keep its hopes of coming home the No. 1 ranked junior college softball squad in the country alive.
The Hawks' offense seemed up to the challenge after coming out on top of a veritable slug fest in Game 3 with Seminole State College, as they downed the Lady Raiders by a score of 12-9.

LUBBOCK — It wasn't exactly how Howard College Head Baseball Coach Britt Smith wanted the season to end, but as he pointed out after the Hawks' 5-2 loss to the Cisco College Wranglers on Wednesday, “These guys went 91-25 in two years. That's .800 baseball — you can't ask for much better than that.”
One bad inning — the top of the second — would come back to haunt the Hawks as the normally dependable starting pitcher Logan Ehlers and the defense gave up five Cisco runs on five hits, a walk and an error.
“(Ehlers) was on short rest,” Smith said. “He didn't have the same velocity.”

When introducing Diamond Mayes to the crowd who gathered to watch her sign a letter of intent to play basketball at Oklahoma Wesleyan University, Big Spring High School Athletic Director Phillip Ritchey said “Diamond (Mayes) is what all Big Spring Steers — Lady Steers should be like.”
Mayes, who has played on the varsity basketball team for four years, as well as other sports, received a full scholarship to OWU.
What drew Mayes to the school was the similarities between there and Big Spring.

LUBBOCK — The Howard College Hawks and the Western Texas College Westerners aren't exactly strangers passing in the night.
The two have met four times this year in Western Junior College Athletic Conference play, in which WTC was outscored by the Hawks 37-3.
A turnaround wasn't in the cards for the Westerners on Thursday, as they found themselves on the short end of an 8-0 ball game in the Hawks' regional championship opener.
MINERAL WELLS — There is no telling how deep into the playoffs the Big Spring Steers baseball squad could go this season, but if they maintain their current pace, it may be a few more weeks before the fans run out of games to attend.
BSHS Coach Bert Otto said prior to the bi-district series opener that he believed his team could compete with Iowa Park in the playoffs.
He was right.
The Steers took the first game by a score of 5-1 and will head into Game Two with the all-important momentum any coach would like when squaring off against the region's best.

Coach Bert Otto and his baseball squad believe it is as they ready themselves for Game One of a three-game series in postseason play against Iowa Park today in Mineral Wells.
