January 27, 2015

Make no mistake about it, the Big Spring High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will step onto the Steer Gym court tonight with huge playoff implications on the line. Gray leads Hawks to 59-50 win over WTC

January 27, 2015

Western Texas may have went into Monday’s matchup with the Howard College Hawks near the bottom of the Western Junior College Athletic Association standings, but HC head coach Scott Raines never let his team believe the Westerners would roll over.
Not even for a second.
That attitude – along with a stellar night by point guard Rob Gray and dominance of the boards – paid huge dividends for the Hawks as they held off a gutsy test from Western Texas to claim a 59-50 victory in the Scurry County Coliseum.

Rodriguez, Lady Steers sink Sweetwater with FT barrage

January 24, 2015

Friday’s showdown with the Sweetwater Lady Mustangs might not have been a work of art, but the Big Spring High School Lady Steers aren’t complaining.
Big Spring scored points from the free throw line and rolled to a 45-28 victory in a crucial District 2-4A showdown in the Steer Gym.

Steers wear down Sweetwater

January 24, 2015

Sometimes ugly can be downright beautiful. Just ask the Big Spring High School Steers, if you need proof.
Big Spring, despite struggling with its perimeter shooting game, used the water erosion approach to perfection against Sweetwater on Friday night in front of a large crowd in the Steer Gym. They simple wore them down with a dominating effort inside from Tyler Bryan and Ty Sealy.
The two BSHS seniors, with plenty of help from seniors Tobyn Tannehill, Matt Yanez and Dee Parker, posted a 34-25 run in the final two quarters of play en route to claiming a tough 51-43 come-from-behind win.

Defense keys Steers’ 45-33 win over Snyder

January 21, 2015

SNYDER – Everyone in the Tigers’ Den on Tuesday night knew the Big Spring High School Steers could score points. They have, after all, scored with the area’s best in each of the last two seasons.
What few expected was how dominating Big Spring would be on the defensive end of the ball.
The Steers limited Snyder to just 13 points in the second and third quarters of play and cruised to a 45-33 victory over the Tigers in a key District 2-4A showdown. As a team, Snyder managed just five baskets from the field in the first 16 minutes.

Lady Steers even 2-4A mark with 55-38 win

January 21, 2015

Batman and Robin.
Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis
David and the rock.
None of those teams were quite as scary as Julianna Rodriguez and Diamonique Mayes were to the Snyder Lady Tigers on Tuesday evening in the Tigers’ Den in Snyder. After all, none of the aforementioned duos had as many hits as the Lady Steers’ offensive leaders.
Rodriguez and Mayes combined for 28 points – just 14 fewer than the entire Snyder team – and August Alexander buried a pair of clutch three-point shots en route to powering Big Spring to a convincing 55-38 victory.

Sands places two on TSMCA all-state team

January 10, 2015

ACKERLY – When it comes to duos, Dayton Eddleman and Dyllan Tindol may well be the best tandem since Batman and Robin. Maybe even better because everyone knew who the two Sands High School standouts were ... and still couldn’t stop them.
As a result, Tindol and Eddleman helped carry the Mustangs to within two games of the Class A, Division II state championship game.
