Coahoma captures bi-district trophy

May 1, 2012

SEMINOLE — The rain held off and the wind picked up just enough to cool the crowd who traveled to see the Coahoma Bulldogettes on Monday in their bi-district matchup against the Ladyjackets of Kemit.

Coahoma — who entered the postseason as the third District 3-2A seed — found themselves trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the third when Bree Hilario bunted and reached safely after Kermit's first basemen bobbled the ball. Laurel Nix hit a one-out single that scored Hilario, who had stolen second and third base, tying the game at 2-all.

April 30, 2012

The Howard College Hawk baseball and softball squads are taking care of business.

Howard College earns split with Odessa

April 28, 2012

Howard College Head Softball Coach Kelly Raines knew going into Friday's series against conference rival Odessa College that the Hawks needed to win at least three of four games against the Wranglers to earn the top seed in regional play.

A two-game sweep at home would have given Raines' team a head start, but a rough inning by HC's ace, Sandra Serna, and a batting clinic staged by the Wranglers dashed that plan as the Hawks found themselves on the short end of a 10-1 ball game — a rarity for the 19-3 (41-14 overall) squad.

When Howard College and New Mexico Junior College meet on the baseball diamond, there is no telling what will happen. The two Western Junior College Athletic Conference bullies met Friday at Jack Barber Field for another chapter in its storied rivalry.

This time, the Hawks would sweep the first two games of the four-game series winning the first outing by a score of 8-3 and taking Game Two 19-11 after a dramatic, eight-run comeback.

Tannehill goes to Dolphins

April 27, 2012

NEW YORK — Former Big Spring High School athlete Ryan Tannehill was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the first round of the NFL draft Thursday.

Tannehill was the eighth pick overall and the third quarterback chosen behind Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III.

The Dolphins must think highly of Tannehill. He is the first quarterback the organization has used a first round pick on since the legendary gunslinger Dan Marino.

That doesn't seem to be bothering the young superstar, as he told the Miami Herald, “I don't think there is any pressure or anything like that from that connection.”

Forsan takes opening playoff game from Crane

April 27, 2012

MIDLAND — Forsan Head Softball Coach Shanna Taylor was happy to get away with an 11-3 win last night against the Crane Ladybirds in the opening round of District 3-2A play.

Despite the lopsided score, Forsan gave Crane several opportunities to snatch the victory from their hands, but when the situation appeared to be turning dire, the Lady Buffs' offense came alive and timely hitting saved the season.

Forsan tennis stars prepare for trip to state

April 26, 2012

Forsan seniors Sydney Holdampf and Kyle Stevenson have both been to the state tennis tournament in Austin before.

Although both of them were eliminated from play in the first round, they believe the experience will help them deal with the mental challenge of competing at such a level when they return to the University of Texas campus to take the courts once again April 30-May 1.

Holdampf and Stevenson played well throughout the year, leading Forsan to a first place finish in district and a second place showing at the regional meet where they each won in straight sets.

Big Spring golfers to tee off at state tourney in Austin

April 26, 2012

Big Spring High School's 21-year drought is over. That's how long it has been since a BSHS golf squad has made an appearance at the state golf tournament.

The Jimmy Clay Golf Course — one of the toughest in the state — in Austin awaits the team. As well as the top high school golfers in the state.

But if you ask Coach Chris Joslin, he would tell you that this is a special year on the links for the Steers golfers.

“All of the kids played really well all year,” Joslin said. It's an exciting time for Big Spring. We feel like all five guys are going to compete.”
