Forsan's Horton, Roman sign with Arlington Baptist College

February 9, 2013

FORSAN — A pair of Forsan student-athletes — P.J. Horton and Brendan Roman — signed letters of intent to attend Arlington Baptist College on Friday. Roman will be on the private, four-year school's track and field squad, while Horton plans to run track and cross country.

Both seniors are excited to take their athletic ability to the collegiate level.

“I chose Arlington Baptist because they told me I would run. I won't have to redshirt. I will be running my freshmen year and the coaches told me if I'm in the top seven on the team, I will go to nationals.”

Steers stomp Stangs, girls fall in thriller to Sweetwater

Big Spring

A few weeks ago, not too many people expected much out of the Steers, who seemed befuddled on the court from the start of District 4-3A, which they opened with four straight losses.

But Head Coach Cliff Thompson insisted it was just a phase his squad was going through while they found their identity.
Apparently, they found it.

Big Spring has won four of their last six games, including a thrilling win over Greenwood last week and Friday's season-ending, 74-54 rout of Sweewater.

Howard College teams rout Clarendon to wrap up road stint

February 8, 2013

CLARENDON — The Lady Hawks came away with a 66-50 road win against Clarendon College in what Head Coach Earl referred to as “a pivotal game”.

“I was really impressed with the way we came out and played,” Diddle said of his squad's performance. “They played well defensively and really had no mental lapses even though Clarendon is a tough team to play against. They are very unorthodox.”

HC led the Lady Bulldogs by 12 at the halfway mark, who pulled within eight in the second half of play, but couldn't complete the rally and fell short in the final minutes of play.

Howard College hoops teams fall to Midland

February 5, 2013

MIDLAND — The Howard College women had a chance to avenge their Jan. 7 home loss to Midland College on Monday, but the Lady Chaparrals hung on to edge the Hawks 63-61 despite a strong effort on the road.

“I thought we played really well defensively,” HC Head Women's Coach Earl Diddle said. “We did a good job on their All-American, Achiri Ade, and we were in a good position to win the game, but you've got missed free throws, missed blockouts — that's how you get beat.”

BORGER — Continuing their four-game road trip, the Hawks visited Frank Phillips College on Thursday where they picked up another conference win, downing the Plainsmen 94-69.

That puts the Hawks in the top of the pack, where they are battling New Mexico Junior College, Odessa College, South Plains College and Midland College for conference supremacy.

“We're all kind of bunched up,” Howard College Head Coach Mark Adams said.

The Plainsmen were overwhelmed from the start.

Cameron Forte scored a game-high 29 points for the Hawks, who led FPC by 18 at the half.

It took the Lady Steers (16-14, 4-4) over five minutes to score during Tuesday's meeting with No. 17 Abilene Wylie. Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs seemed as if they couldn't miss a shot, outscoring Big Spring 32-5 in the first half.

With about four minutes remaining before halftime, a fire alarm was tripped, halting the action for about 10 minutes. It was just a false alarm, but unfortunately for Big Spring it didn't interrupt Wylie's rhythm. The Lady Bulldogs went home with their perfect District 4-3A record intact after a 60-24 blowout win.

Less than a minute into the game, Tyler Graves put up four points and Tavaris Walker registered his first two points of the outing, putting BSHS up 6-0.

Looking dominant on defense, the Steers forced three straight turnovers — all of which turned into points.

Snyder was unable to put together a meaningful rally, as BSHS led the Tigers from start to finish.

SWEETWATER — The Steers have struggled since district play began, but they may have turned a corner Tuesday as Big Spring defeated the Mustangs 49-39 to pick up its first 4-3A victory.

After a hard-fought loss to Greenwood last Friday, the win came in a timely manner for BSHS Head Coach Cliff Thompson.

“We carried over the momentum from the Greenwood game,” Thompson said. “We executed well and we shot the ball well and played good defense.”

Ty Sealy and Tyler Graves each put up 13 points for the Steers, while Tavaris Walker had nine.
