Monday roundup: Hawks sweep McMurry

ABILENE — The Howard College baseball team improved to 16-2 for the season by sweeping a doubleheader with McMurry University Monday afternoon.

In Monday's first game, the Hawks broke open a tie game with three runs in the fifth inning, then held on for an 8-5 win. Dominic Moreno took the win in relief of Howard starter Ethan Carnes, and Nick Sawyer recorded the last four outs to earn the save.

Offensively, Howard's 12-hit attack was paced by Dexter Kjerstad, who belted a home run, and Jordan Allen, who added a double.

BSHS girls claim Canyon Reef Relays title

SNYDER — Big Spring High School track and field athletes brought home plenty of gold from Friday's Canyon Reef Relays at Snyder High School.

Big Spring finished first in the girl's division and second in boy's competition at the meet. The Lady Steers scored 236 points to easily out-distance runner-up Abilene Wylie (188) for the girl's team title, while Snyder edged out Big Spring 161 points to 148, for the boy's team championship.

Sands, Grady vie for state berth

The Sands Mustangs and Grady Wildcats have played plenty of big games over the years, but none will be bigger than Saturday's basketball contest between the two schools.

The Mustangs and Wildcats were scheduled to play at 2 p.m. Saturday in the championship game of the Region I-1A Div. II Tournament at South Plains College in Levelland. And the stakes — a spot in the state basketball tournament for the winner — couldn't be bigger.

Hawks end regular season on high note

The Howard College women's basketball team ended its season on a winning note, but the Hawks needed every second on the clock to do it.

Senior guard Kali Jerrell hit two free throws with no time remaining to give Howard a 61-59 victory over Frank Phillips College in the regular-season finale for both teams at Garrett Coliseum Thursday evening.

In Thursday's nightcap, the Howard men's team needed no such late heroics as it tuned up for the upcoming Region V Tournament with a 75-54 win over Frank Phillips.

Crossroads softball tournament starts today

Local softball lovers will find themselves close to nirvana starting today.

Thirty teams from across West Texas, including the host Big Spring Lady Steers and the Forsan Lady Buffaloes, will converge on the Roy Anderson Complex for the three-day Tournament At The Crossroads, which runs through Saturday.

The Lady Steers (5-5) will open play in Pool C, along with Alpine, Jim Ned, Fort Stockton, Odessa Permian and Lubbock Estacado. Forsan will play in Pool B, which also includes Andrews, Midland Lee junior varsity, Levelland, Hawley and Odessa.

'Kats scratch way to regional tourney

For the Garden City Bearkats, it was a matter of simple math — two is greater than one.

The Bearkats rode the hot shooting hands of Sam Miller and Corbin Davis to a 71-52 victory over Ira in their Class 1A Div. II regional quarterfinal showdown in Garrett Coliseum Tuesday night.

Garden City's formula for success? Miller and Davis out-aced Ira's Lance Morris.

All-District 3-2A basketball team announced

Athletes from Coahoma, Forsan and Stanton were well-represented on the recently released All-District 3-2A basketball team.

Stanton's Tara Patterson and Jennifer Henley were both named to the girls' all-district first team, while Coahoma senior Jennifer Castilaw was joined by Cheyenne Galloway and Raegan Haggard of Forsan on the second team.

Coahoma's Minnie Goodblanket, Forsan's Maria Ortiz and Stanton's Selah Ramsey were named to the 3-2A all-defensive girls' team.

Howard women swamp conference-leading NMJC

HOBBS, N.M. — The Howard College women's basketball team tossed a huge monkey wrench at the Western Junior College Athletic Conference race Monday night.

On the same night they were mathematically eliminated from postseason play, the Hawks decided to play spoiler in a major way by crushing WJCAC leader New Mexico Junior College, 67-51, Monday night.

Howard's win creates a bit of a logjam at the top of the league standings — the loss drops NMJC into a tie for with Midland College with identical 9-2 marks, while Odessa College is only a game back at 8-3.
