SNYDER â The Howard College womenâs basketball team had reason to be encouraged at the end of a sloppy first half against Western Texas College, considering the Lady Westerners werenât doing much better.
That was because the Hawksâ defense stayed steady throughout Tuesdayâs game, and once the offense woke up, Howard College had a firm grip on the game.
January 22nd
Apparently, the Big Spring Lady Steers made up their minds in practice Wednesday they werenât going to fall to 0-4 in District 5-3A play.
Whatever was said then, it definitely gave Big Spring a much-needed spark as the Lady Steers upended Snyder 59-53 Friday in Steer Gym.
âWe were just determined,â BSHS center Cerbi Ritchey said. âIn practice on Wednesday, we decided âHey, weâre tired of this and this isnât our team. So weâre going to practice hard and weâre going to play hard.â So we did. We played like we practiced this week and it really paid off.â

Maybe the newly-ranked No. 24 Steers are getting a little bit more attention than they thought they would at this point in the season.
January 21st
Howard College athletic director Britt Smith has announced the forfeit of two men's basketball games because the Hawks inadvertently played an ineligible player in the Mesa Shootout over the winter break.
The forfeits change the Hawks' overall record from 15-3 to 13-5. They are 3-1 in conference play in the western zone of Region 5.
"The player's eligibility has since been re-established and he has returned to the team. The eligibility issue was a communication error within the athletic department and the student athlete was not at fault," Smith said.
Earl Diddle wasnât lying when he told his team every game will be decided by the last few possessions in Western Junior College Athletic Conference play.
While the last few possessions in the New Mexico Junior College game didnât go exactly as planned, the last few in Howard Collegeâs 74-71 win over No. 6 Midland Thursday earned them one of the biggest victories of the season.
Big Spring center Devante Lloyd applied one of the sayings from football head coach Phillip Ritchey to the Steersâ basketball season so far.
âCoach Ritchey once said âOnce you catch fire, thereâs no telling how far youâll go,ââ Lloyd said. âSo thatâs the way I see it. We have two wins in district so we caught fire. Weâre just going to keep going from there.â
How on fire are the Steers? Itâs early, but theyâre 2-0 in District 5-3A play and ranked No. 24 in the state according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coachesâ rankings.
The Big Spring swimming team may have something to prove at todayâs District 4-4A meet.
In a district with powerhouses such as Monahans and Pecos, the Steers are looking to make a name for themselves today at the Jerry Larned Sports Complex in Monahans.
âFor a lot of them, this is their first year,â BSHS swimming coach Mackenzie Miles said. âThey want to make a name for themselves. Whatâs most important to me is that the one who donât get to move on to regionals, that theyâre able to be most successful at this meet and get their best times.â

Howard men
The 2010-2011 season for Howard College menâs basketball continues to be one of the more unusual ones.
The No. 8 Hawks have lost seven players to suspensions this season, whittling the roster down to five players heading into one of the biggest games of the year. No. 15 Midland College visits at 7:45 p.m. today in Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
âI cannot remember a more challenging season than what weâve had here,â head coach Mark Adams said. âWe keep thinking surely, itâs going to start getting better.â
January 19th
Big Spring boys
More than anything, the first quarter of the Big Spring-Sweetwater game Tuesday in Steer Gym was an exhibition of athleticism on the Steersâ part.
There was that uptempo style they like to run and a couple of missed dunks that had fans buzzing.
But forward Mike Menefield gave the fans what they wanted on a fast break with a two-handed jam that gave the Steers a 13-7 lead.
By then the Steers were well on their way to the 75-46 drubbing of the Mustangs in District 5-3A play.
Coahoma boys
COAHOMA â Coahoma head coach Kim Nichols continues to stress putting four quarters together as the Bulldogs dropped a District 3-2A contest to Denver City at home.
Tanner Ruizâs 16 points werenât enough to keep the Bulldogs around in this game. The Bulldogs cut a deficit to seven twice late in the game, but Denver City was just too much.
Things havenât exactly gone the Bulldogsâ way so far in district play with injuries, among other things, ailing the team, but Nichols said his group is still positive about halfway through district play.
