LAMESA â€“ For the first 16 minutes of Tuesday nightâ€™s District 2-4A opener, the Big Spring High School Lady Steers managed to fight their way through a poor shooting performance and turnovers caused by eight days of rust.
In the final 16 minutes, nothing Big Spring head coach Stacy Smalley tried could prevent the rust from allowing the Lamesa Lady Tors from grinding out a stunning 45-34 come-from-behind victory in front of their home fans.
The Big Spring High School Steers will have to wait a few more days to return to the basketball court.
Due to inclement weather conditions in West Texas, Big Spring and Fort Stockton school officials announced on Friday morning that the non-district game scheduled for tonight had been cancelled. According to weather reports, road conditions in the area are expected to deteriorate today, creating unsafe driving conditions.
Big Spring is scheduled to return to play on Jan. 16 in Levelland.
The Howard College menâ€™s and womenâ€™s basketball teams will return to Western Junior College Athletic Conference action for the first time in more than a month tonight when they host South Plains College in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum. The games are scheduled to tip off at 5:45 p.m. with the womenâ€™s matchup.
Andrews knocked down 17 free throws and raced to a 52-47 come-from-behind win over the Big Spring Steers in non-district basketball action.
Overall, Andrews made 17 of 27 free throw attempts in the contest. In contrast, Big Spring went to the charity stripe just 14 times in the contest, making six.

Mother Nature finally found a way to do something no other team at the Sandhills Invitational Basketball Tournament couldnâ€™t. She cooled off the Big Spring High School Steers.
Due to the arrival of a severe winter storm, officials within the Monahans Independent School District decided on Tuesday to cancel the tournamentâ€™s championship game due to declining road conditions that would have required both Big Spring and Levelland to travel on icy roads.
Texas Longhorns football coach Charlie Strong had some strong words following his teamâ€™s 31-7 loss to Arkansas in the Texas Bowl.
The Big Spring High School kicked off their appearance in the 2014 Sandhills Invitational Basketball Tournament on a high note on Monday by pounding out a pair of key wins in pool play in the Jerry Larned Sports Complex in Monahans.
With the two wins, the Steers moved to within a pair of wins today from advancing to the tournament championship game on Saturday. Big Spring is scheduled to face Presidio and the Monahans JV today in the final day of Pool B play.
Erin Pollard and Julianna Rodriguez collected more than a few accolades for their prowess on the volleyball court after having led the Big Spring Lady Steers to a second straight trip to the regional tournament.
Now they have more.
Pollard and Rodriguez were both named to the 2014 Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Volleyball Team earlier this week. The two were among more than 150 high school players honored throughout the state in Class 2A through Class 6A.
