Lady Bearkats take top honors at Coahoma Invitational

March 31, 2011

All together now.

The Garden City girls golf team took top team honors at Wednesday's Coahoma High School Invitational, held at Comanche Trail Golf course in Big Spring.

GCHS had four girls shoot within eight strokes of each other — Britni Cook led the way with a score of 90, followed by Katelyn Hoelscher with 91, Ashley Halfmann with 92 and Rachel Hirt with a 98 — and this “Xerox” approach was more than good enough to give the Lady Bearkats the tourney title.

Lady Steers unable to overcome early deficit

March 30, 2011

If the Big Spring Lady Steers ever get over their unfortunate tendency to give away runs, they could become a force in District 5-3A.

For the second game in a row, the Lady Steers dug themselves a hole too deep to climb out of, allowing six unearned runs in the first inning en route to dropping a 10-8 decision to Abilene Wylie in district softball action at the Big Spring ISD softball complex Tuesday.

Wylie outlasts BSHS in chilly district showdown

March 30, 2011

The word for the day was “cold.”

When an early spring norther blows through town, there's no colder place to watch baseball than Steer Park, and such was the case Tuesday. Temperatures in the 40s — and wind chills even lower than that — had fans scurrying for coats, blankets and hot chocolate.
